I began to notice it a few nights ago, when there was barely any mention of it on the internet. At first I thought it was the amount of game saves I had, because it kept getting progressively worse as I kept playing and making new saves. At some points in the game, mostly in outdoor environments or in battles, my frame rate drops to a very low level. I would say somewhere in the range of 10-15 FPS. Other times during battles or when using shouts, the game will literally freeze up for about a second or more before it resumes playing. I did turn autosaves off, and that seems to help a bit when going through the menu, and entering cities and buildings.
My play time is roughly 38 hours or so. My character is level 23. I tend to keep my inventory 3/4 of the way full. I have quite a bit of stuff stored in my house in Whiterun. My save file is in the 6.4mb range, and I started noticing these troubles in the 4mb or 5mb range. I pick a lot of locks, steal a lot of stuff, and kill a lot of animals (I like to end most Skyrim sessions with some bow hunting in Riften.) I've killed four dragons.
I'm playing on a 160gb slim PS3 that I bought brand new back in April (model CECH-2501A). I've only got a few games installed on it, so it can't be very full. The poor frame rates begin as soon as I start playing, and don't seem to get any better or worse throughout my session. Frequent jittering and freezing is very common while I'm playing. Last weekend I was playing about 10 hours a day totally fine, but during the work week it's dropped to 5 or 6 hours, and lag is getting worse and worse. Sorry if I've left out any details. If I can think of anything else to add, I'll be sure to add it.
And for what it's worth: My PS3 is plugged into an Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 surround sound system, and a 42" Panasonic TC-P42S2 plasma (never had any issues with this setup).
I've been following these threads for the last couple days now, and I know the folks at Bethesda are reading everything we have to say. I know there are individuals that wish they could post on here and just come right out and say "YES, WE'RE WORKING ON IT. THANK YOU!" but it's not always that easy, especially in situations such as this. Their hands are tied, and their jobs rely on them keeping their mouths shut. That's why they have PR departments that take extreme measures before publishing any sort of statement. It's a dangerous thing to go and say "Yes, we're aware of the PS3 lagging issues, we're working on it." If they were to admit that there's a specific issue, they'd basically be obligated to fix it, and if they were unable to, things could get pretty nasty. I know the guys and gals that have put their blood sweat and tears into one of the best video games ever made would love to come here and chat with us about it, but, they cannot. Their hands are tied by their legal departments and contracts. They feel our pain -- trust me.
My game is still rather playable, but I can tell the lag and frame rate issues are getting worse. Skyrim is one of the best games I've ever played, and I think Bethesda did a great job with it. I know they're feeling the heat, so I'm not going to go on some rant about getting ripped off. I've gotten more hours of awesome gaming out of Skyrim than I have from titles such as Uncharted 1, 2, and 3 combined. And that's worth something to me.
Thanks for your time.
