there's no way of playing the DLC content without starting the MQ? how much are they intertwine?

don't get me wrong i'm loving that it came out, i will probably give up the joy of no dragons or wait for next playthrough, but yeah ;-)

Complete the Horn of something Windcaller and that forces the 'event' to start MQ of Dragonborn. You can still go to Solstheim if you dont start the MQ of it though. Boat in Windhelm, 250 gold.

You won't be able to do the main quest in Dragonborn until you've completed The Horn of Jurgen Windcaller in Skyrim's main quest, but you can still travel to Solstheim, explore and do the side quests.
