Is it really THAT HARD to stick with a single character for more than a week? I'm STILL on my first character and I don't plan on making another one for a bit.

Its happening again! It happened on Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas... Restartitis disease.

...When i play Bethesda/Obsidian games, my mind is working overtime and whenever i see something and realize my character isn't that something or could do that something better if i just started again... I then for the next 15mins have this conversation in my head that my character is obsolete and not as fun as if i made another character. I have had the game since release and played 4-5 hours a day and have only done in total about 8 quests and have had over 20 new characters! I just climbed the 7000 steps for the first time and wanted to start again; I have had to turn my PS3 of before i go crazy and do it again.

Its ruining the game doing the same things over and over again. The voice in my head literally won't stop saying "Make a new character, go on it will be better and more fun" Anyone else do/doing this? I can't be alone? ... I love this game and i can't play it.

Below are some further details, you won't need to read if you have experienced this and understand it
-------------------------

I understand most of you but I rerolled once mainly because i had a idea of a character in my head months ago and I made him and turned out didn't quite work how I wanted it...I was going to be a Dark Elf assassin of the brotherhood as a vampire....when i finally achieved all this turned out vampire wasn't so great anymore and I was having a hard time..So I rerolled a Khajiit and love it same build.....skills arent much of a big deal in this game any character can lvl there skills up to anything

only reason I see for a reroll you totally messed up ur perks remember people we can save them so don't feel the need to use them right away.....my character is lvl48 and I dominate anything in my path now you get owned by my dual wielding dagger and sword or my bow or my shouts or if am in the mood my magic or if ur really got it coming to you...sneak cast invis...btw quiet casting is absolutely ness if your gonna be any thief assassin type invis is basicly useless untill you get it....got a flawless ebony dagger and sword and bow dagger and sword enchanted with 10 absorb health each...

All you dual wielders out there I suggest strongly you find a absorb health weapon disenchant know the spell and enchant your blades with them no block nothing to lower hits but if you svckin there health to ur bar makes a huge diff in fights... I got 310 health 300 mag and 280 stamina and 395 armor rating in light armor its all in the spec tree mine went more combat path except for 2 points in smithing and 1 in enchantment rest all goes to perks that increase dam crits or is just cool....get invis and assassinate nothing like poping out of invis and watching someones throat get sliced =)

Haha I'm guilty of this too... So basically what I do is roll three characters immediately, one mage, one thief/assassin, one sword 'n board warrior. Those are my three favorite types, and then whenever I feel like playing a certain style, I just load up that character.

The only problem is, I have to make sure to mix up which missions I do because they can get tedious when doing them for the third time in a row. Luckily, my three characters tend to go different ways early on in the game.

First character was a little Breton Mageling. I did not enjoy it too much after 10 hours or so.
Re-made this time a Wood-Elf Sneaky/stabby/shooty LUUURRRRVE it.

What I do when I get a game like Skyrim is create 2-10 characters right away, all of the ideas I have. Then I choose the one I like best and go from there. If I feel like playing something else I just switch along the way.

At first I thought I was the only one with this problem.

I think I may have restarted like 12 times for a slew of different reasons in Morrowind.

In Oblivion I restarted HUNDREDS of times because I couldnt get my character to look the way I wanted.

Skyrim: Not ONCE.

Character models are amazing, with the exclusion of the alien-bug-eyes of the Dunmer. (Not all of them look like that, but it took me abit to find the right eyes.)

I also had Times of thinking about new chars, Builded an Archery/Sneak Toon and an Barbarian, both to easy to play.
Then i saw an conjured weapon and thought "wow i want that".
So i have found my Toon, Conujured Weapon, Sneak, Ilusion, Cloth Armor.

Sometimes only one thing can change all.

I only re-roll when I have enough knowledge about the game to make a perfect character.

I want to try and start it in Skyrim, but I am not sure how to do it with the new system yet. It bugs me though because the thought of starting over on a perfect character is ALWAYS in the back of my mind while I play :(

I've rerolled 4 times 3 times as a Warrior mostly to optimise my character . Then after hitting level 15 i decided i wanted to roll as a Mage. Pure Mage is working much better for me i'll play as a Warrior after i've beaten the main quest and played threw most of the guilds. .

I always have this problem in RPGs with any depth of choice, it's happened in Skyrim already.

I was playing a straight-up sword and board warrior until I saw a video of a conjuration mage fighting a dragon with his conjured blades on YouTube, and I was suddenly inspired to make a sort of dark templar warrior who fights in heavy armour with conjured blades and raises his enemies from the dead to do his bidding. So I shelved my warrior (just in case I change my mind) and am now level 9 or so on my new character, so far I don't regret it because the combination is amazing.

As has been pointed out: It's not about seeing something statistically better and wanting to be OP, if that were the case I'd have power-levelled blacksmithing and enchanting. It's about seeing something that inspires you, or makes you feel bored of your current character, and suddenly you lose all interest in playing that character any more.

Use
a character
who focuses on
Alteration.

Also, smithing, enchanting, and alchemy add lotsa variety.
These 4 + 1 combat skill, doesn't matter which, and you'll have all the variety you want. Make sure to distribute perks EVENLY between everything, and FIRST PERK SHOULD BE IN a crafting skill.
possible combat skills include Destruction, One-Handed, Two-Handed, and Archery. Other skills are too indirectly supportive for direct combat.

To review: Alteration, smithing, enchanting, alchemy, 1combatskill. Distribute points evently.
Also distribute magicka/health/stamina points evenly.

I had an idea in my head months ago, and it took me like 3-5 times to get it right. I'm already settled on playing a warrior, so that part was easy :D. However, I can never really decide on looks (nose too long, eyes too close together, lips too fat, etc.), so I came up with the brilliant idea of PICKING A NUMBER and using THAT to rule the slider settings! :hubbahubba: So I picked the number 7, and that means that I can go either 7 ticks from the left or 7 ticks from the right. I made certain exceptions, like with hair and eyes, but that's it though. Stick to the number! Then I named her after the number I picked.... Looked up the number (was in my native tongue, so not English) and found out it was kind of a short version of a name whose meaning was perfect for my character! :celebration: Now I LOVE my character! Pick a number between 1 and 20 and roll a character! Loads of fun. Maybe even look up the number, say, Three, and see what it is in other languages using Google Translate!

Dang nab it OP, I think I have to hate you now. (/facetiousness)

I want to start my thief build earlier that planned. :P

I will keep and continue to play my current character though. I just can't stop thinking about my thief build after this thread.

Must.....try....to...........restrain........

I ended up rerolling once because my first character (was at level 29 or something) way overleveled on Alchemy and Smithing so I had terrible combat skills. Was getting curb stomped by everything. I think a bunny could have taken me down, forget a freaking dragon.

My current character will probably see the end of the main quest, by then Mods should be here and I can indulge my altitis in full.

i feel for you OP. this happens to me in every RPG with more than one option at the start of the game. perhaps the worst example is dragon age origin for me, and i know what your saying, it only has 3 classes, thats what makes it pitiful... i always try and play a warrior or mage and end up ONLY liking the rogue... but yeah with bethesda i flip flop way too much.

this time around i'm lucky though. i just started playing nords in oblivion towards the end of my play cycle, and lo and behold skyrim is very nod centric so i am rolling a warrior on the xbox and a rogie on the PC version.

just keep telling yourself, every time u stop to think about those kind of questions its ruining the game for you. for once i want to experience the game with a fresh run through where i'm not always revisiting the same stuff over and over because of all the restarts.... good luck!!!!

I get the exact same thing. I've already spent a... stupid amount of time on a character, got him to level 44, then said "[censored] it, I'm starting over." I've had to overcome this... restartitis with other games like Dragon Age and Fallout. You just gotta slow down, and think. Think of your character as yourself immersed in the world (i.e. not playing as a previously conceived character you couldn't really see yourself as).

For example, my first character was a paladin type. Hammer weilding, plate donning, and totally badass, but not really "me". He was built perfectly for 2h melee combat, but after like... 50 hours of play, I wasn't having fun anymore, and I was just rushing through the quests. If you think fireballs and sorcery is wicked sweet, but doesn't really reflect who you are, maybe you should rethink your path through the game.

My new character is a hunter/swordsman, which is something I could see myself as in this world. It's odd, but this time I've already found myself taking in much more of the landscape and environment, and I've picked up on a lot of things I've missed on my first playthrough. So, take some time, do some patient theory crafting while looking at the perk trees, and play through the game nice and easy, as you would if you, yourself, were actually in Skyrim. There's no rush.

I'm not sure if I've really offered any insight, but hope this has helped in some way.

I use to do this a lot too, actually...
I fixed it by experimenting with everything at the start of the game, even putting perks in things I liked when I felt like it. Things were always a half-debate half-dedication until I settled on mage. I did this by lvl 11 and I'm still plenty powerful now at lvl 30.

Don't dedicate yourself from the start, just experiment. That's how I countered this. Also, you should be VERY METICULOUS about the way your character looks since you can't change it. I spent about 30 min maybe on just customization, spending more isn't so wrong either.

be as random, undedicated, and experimental as possible at the start. You must toy with your feeling of dedication, feel dedicated to each side completely for a little while then settle casually on what you ended up doing more.

Also, patience is a SKILL not something you just HAVE. Practice.

Well, I prefer character development, anyway, and I play primarily to anolyze game content. This type of thing isn't unusual for Beth's games, though. Many people play Beth games for hundreds of hours and never get far in the main quest. Some never even start it at all.

By the way, OP, look at it from a different perspective. You ARE playing the game. Don't beat yourself up for restarting new characters. Just enjoy what you play even if that is the same or similar parts with many characters. Problem solved.

Seriously OP, you need to make a character and stick to it. Making and re-making characters is just going to lead to you putting the game aside, and that would be a great shame.

Yes I...happen to have this...disease again. In Oblivion it was worse though. In Skyrim I have just made about 5 characters. In Oblivion I had way more. They all had unique story and all that. But now I have decided to play with my main character only.Doing the main quest.Still, there are moments when I'm like "Damn I shouldve done that and that".
