Keeping the calf...

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 9:45 pm

I was just wondering if anyone who did the quest for Follows-Chalk kept the calf instead of returning it to its mother... If you did, did you really get to keep the calf? I turned it in, and I forgot to save right before doing it.

I almost kept the lil fella but I assumed that you'd have to keep feeding him banan yukka in order for him to keep following you which would be a PITA so I gave him back.

I clicked it once to see what it did.

You just get to keep it, but you have to continue feeding it banana yucka. I honestly cannot see any reason the devs thought adding that option in was even neccesary.

Mine got stuck inside a rock. He couldn't move, so I pushed mother to meet him, that didn't work either. I really didn't want to load my save so I shot him...and all the others too. Meh.

There will deffinatly be some EXTREMELY odd people that want a virtual burden following them around.

I'm not one of them though.

So all it does is follow you? Glad to know I didn't miss out on anything.

I'm actually stuck on this quest. Pretty sad really. Especially considering its the first quest given to you after paling around with Follows-Chalk.

I had the calf quest checked and still somehow ended up at The Burned Man's camp.

What am I so painfully obviously missing?

There's a path leading into the cliffs above the camp, you need to take it and work your way up to where the calf is. Threw me for a few seconds at first too, but then I remembered that the Pip-Boy does not account for elevation differences and went looking for a way up.

Ok, so I actually have to go to the camp where Graham is located before I can find the calf. It's been driving me nuts. Thanks.

Yes, go to camp in front of his cave, go left (as you face it) and there's a slope leading to stone bridge.

I kept the calf for a while, I didn't have to feed it but it kept getting stuck and so I didn't find if it would get involved in fights. I did notice that almost all it's health has been used up, which suggests it wouldn't last long in one anyway.

I've done the quest twice, with and without the animal friend perk and without it I couldn't complete it without killing the mother first, which seems a bit mad.

I did it. Just crouch and try to stay away from them. That way they don't turn hostile.

They didn't do anything special. Actually to prevent it from following you anywhere else but the mother would have been extra work

It's pretty much like any other quest companion follow script except it has a timer and no additional companion AI. I would guess it has one idle animation and the timed follow script which has to be reactivated by the feeding dialog.

Nope, you're not. Clipping issues was one that I had hoped the devs would clean up a bit, but such was not to be, I guess.

I didn’t like this quest. Spoilers for those who haven’t done it yet, don’t read any further. When I got the calf back the mother was already dead even though I didn’t kill any animals, I was crouched the whole time, holstered weapon. When I got back to Chalk the dialogue option had me admit to killing an animal even though I returned the calf and my “reward” was just a war club. Wiki says I should have gotten more XP and a .45 so I’m going to reload a save and try again. The mother must have gotten killed by something else, a fall, couldn’t tell but how come I got blamed for it?

More spoilers. I did the quest over, returned the calf, got my .45 and extra XP. The quest was much easier and quicker the second time around and it was one of those OCD moments where you fix the problem now rather than go another couple hours into the game and wish you’d done it later when you had the chance. :geek:
