I spent a large amount of today cleaning up my desktop, uninstalling unused programs, and organizing my files and now I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do to keep my computer as clean and efficient as possible. I started by literally moving every icon on my desktop (minus the recycling bin) into a folder labeled "desktop" so now I can actually SEE my screensaver and it only costs me an extra double-click to get to everything. Overall I find this much more manageable as any little files or images I plan on moving of deleting after use I can just plop on the real desktop so I won't forget about them.

Most importantly I want to know how you organize your games? I'm kind of assuming most of you here just run games off of your steam library but I don't use steam so my solution was put all the shortcuts in a folder within the desktop folder and replaced the generic folder icon with a game controller. Not perfect but it works and lets me launch all my games from a nice alphabetized list.

So, let's discuss. I got a little carried away today and my computer feels pretty... Sterile, empty, barren. I'm looking for some helpful gadgets for windows 7 to fill the now empty desktop space. What are some of your favorites? Also, what do you guys do with default programs that came with windows that you'll never use? Is it ok to uninstall them to free up some memory? To be honest I'm a little afraid of uninstalling something important so I haven't done too much.

I kept my Windows desktop clean with no icons at all (not even the recycle bin which is turned off anyway) since the Windows 95 days, and these days I use just a plain blue background too so no wallpaper

I mostly play from the Steam library these days but the few non-Steam games I have are the same as they always been, they are in Games\GameName in the Start menu.

So nothing on the Desktop and a nice and tidy Start menu

Why even bother with shortcuts at all? Just learn to use the windows key and start typing.

Just going through the motions seems to be the same amount of effort to me. Only 'important' things are on my desktop I pretty much have their locations memorized. There is no order to how they go though.
