Knife Of Dunwall Feedback for Arkane

Post » Tue May 07, 2013 12:07 pm

So thought I would write this, as a very big fan of Dishonoed, and the fact Arkane actually takes fan feedback.

Played Knife of Dunwall four times, three on low Chaos, One on high.

The Protagonist: During the base game of Dishonored, I absolutely loved Daud, he was by far my favorite game (Possibly due to his amazing VA, Michael Madisen). His personality and character traits where the best in the game, being a professorial assassin with deep regret for killing the empress in both Low and High Chaos. His boss fight was the best part of the game for me, two equals duking it out. After playing Knife of Dunwall four times, I think it's safe to say, Daud is still an amazing character, leauges above Corvo in the base game (Possibly due to his amazing VA, who once again is Michael Madisen). He was actually voiced (By a excellent VA) and had deep motivations (Unlike Corvo). I think the best part about Daud, is that he actually felt DIFFERENT then Corvo, in gameplay and Story terms. Arkane could have made Daud a re-skinned Corvo but they DIDN'T. Kudos to you on Daud Arkane (And Michael Madison)

The Antagonist:
Spoiler

The Other Character: The side characters of Knife of Dunwall are generally of the same, or even greater then, quality of Base Dishonored, with there VA's of excellent quality. We have Rothwild, a twisted man who pushes his workers to near-death, but human enough to be deeply affected and disturbed by the Whales haunting songs, Timish, a love-obsessed old man who confiscates people's property's for his own selfish gain. The list goes on. I think the character who really stands out, is Billie Lurk, who gets a great deal of on-screen time to develop her character. Even better, like some of the characters in base Dishonored, her actions and personality are directly affected by your Chaos rating. So great job on the Characters Arkane.

Gameplay: The gameplay, like base Dishonored, is still amazing and REALLY fresh due to the number of new powers and gadgets. Daud feels ALOT more tactical then Corvo, with his new timestop/blink ability, which allows you to be more precise and effective when blinking. Summon Assassin is AWESOME, useful for causing distractions and extra help in a fight. Both Stun and ARC mines are also really cool, causing noise, then lureing your enemies onto a mine is REALLY satisfying. Choke dust, is AMAZING, awesome for quick getaway's, non-lethal take downs, lethal take downs, and a bunch of other stuff. Void gaze is cool (I like it's blue effect more then Corvo's LOL yeah i'm shallow). The Wristmounted crossbow...need I say more? (It's fricken awesome...) So gameplay is STILL awesome...

The Story: The story is...good. I dont wanna spoil any of it, so yeah. Though too much build up, too little pay off. Though this is understandable due to this being a two-part DLC, So yeah, hopefully the pay off comes in the Brigmore Witch's Good job though Arkane

Value: Excellent value for ten dollars. I spent over 13 hours so far, and want to keep playing. So, AMAZING value for the price.

Overall: As a fan of Dishonored Arkane, I WANT YOU TO KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING, I COMMAND IT ( ).

9.0-9.5

Whats your Feedback for Arkane?

I pretty much agree with everything above.

Although something I would have REALLY enjoyed was one more power. I felt like 4 powers just wasn't enough compared to Corvo's 5, and because of that I wasn't able to be as creative with my approach.
I was really hoping to see the 'Tether' power (I believe it's called that). It's the green power that the assassin uses on Corvo at the beginning of the main game to suspend him in the air. It would have been awseome to have that available. And if you could grab someone with a tether and then fling them forward at an enemy, then that would be so AWSEOME.
Imagine a guard is about to shoot his gun at you. You stop time (so the bullet is in mid-air), grab another guard with a tether, and then fling him into the bullet (and further into his friend). Or you could stop time and grab the guard with the gun using a tether so he is pulled into his own bullet xD

It would be great to see that in the next part, The Brigmore Witches, but it might feel kinda weird to just have an extra power available.

Also, nice job on making Daud feel and play differently to Corvo. The more advanced Blink, or transversal as I like to call it, really makes me feel more like Daud, coupled with the fact that you didn't just strap a Heart to Daud and say "Yeah, he has one too. Deal with it." Summon assassin is such a great distraction too.

I'm hoping that The Brigmore Witches will finish Dauds story with 4 missions, rather than 3. I feel like 3 missions would just be too little and feel like the story is rushed through.
I have no doubt that it will feel like a more complete experience when the second part is out, as I could only just get Bend Time level 2 with the amount of runes in the 3 missions (I like strapping mines/ old springrazors to wristbow/ crossbow bolts, if you are wondering).

All in all, brilliant DLC, just has a few things that Arkane could expand on and add to allow for more creativity (which, IMO, is one of the core concepts of the game), and maybe more interactions between Daud and his assassins (which will probably happen, considering the fact that you end up in the Flooded District base).

I <3 Arkane Studios!!!

I absolutely agree to everything you said it. One of the best dlc I have played and great value for money. Duad is a great character and his voice is so good (quite attractive actually) My only complaint is I want more! Billie Lurk was great on giving hints and backround information(better than a talking heart) really useful and gave you a sense that you were a leader of the assassins. I liked how your actions affected her in the story too. I loved the favours that you can purchase, more of them are most welcome. I would like the option for assassins to take care of guards in a non lethal way or to use destractions to open up a path for Duad. I wonder if we would have someone like Billie Lurk again in the next dlc.

What if, at the start of The Brigmore Witches, Daud is training his assassins. Then you have a choice in how to train them; to kill mercilessy, or to only kill when necessary. That would mean that whenever you summon your assassin for a stealth kill, they would either kill or knock-out your target respectively :}D

I'll try to sum up my thoughts on the DLC in short bulletpoints:

Good stuff that should be kept in any further instalments of the game:
- no heart mechanic for finding runes and bone charms - very good, makes searching for runes more fun, the heart made it just too easy especially with markers on, the sound + void gaze = more than enough.
- improved blink - one could argue that it has become too powerful, but on the whole it seems people like it. It's very good for high chaos people,
- increased difficulty is a plus, especially introduction of more challenging foes,
- a protagonist that isn't silent - excellent, I love him,
- story that seems to be more complex and not as obvious as in the main game - very good,

On the whole I feel like a lot of thought went into the DLC and things that were changed as compared to the main game are usually an improvement.

Stuff with room for improvement:
- mission design that doesn't rely on objective markers - this was my main gripe in this DLC. Arkane should just test their missions without objective markers enabled. Most of the time, it'd be really easy to avoid the confusion. For example in the final mission any of the assassins could say "I will meet you...." which would get put in your journal. Most of the other marker-reliant missions were "favours", but still, there's no reason why you shouldn't be expected to find those objects without markers. Just describe the area better.

That's pretty much it... I can't think of any other criticism towards the DLC.

After two playthroughs, here are my thoughts on the game, and some feedback for the developers. By the way, amazing job dear Arkane, this is one damn fine DLC, I was left wanting more!

Pros:
- Playing Daud really felt like an assassin.
- Daud's Blink: a very useful addition, using Blink is now much more convenient, and tactical. Perfect for "on-the-run" control, for escaping, and for planning our next move.
- The Wristbow: an amazing addition! How it looks, how it works, very stylish, it just really suits the assassin type and style. I admit I didn't really like Corvo's crossbow, the look was great, but I couldn't just get into it. This wristbow is what an assassin should use, half-concealed, quick and easy to use.
- Choke dust, arc mines: I really liked these equipments, especially the choke dust, it really is a nice addition to both lethal and non-lethal playstyles, and is also very useful for escaping and disappearing.
- The design of the Rothwild Slaughterhouse: man, what an amazing level! And yes, the living whale is a very nice touch too. It just makes Dishonored's world even more cruel and disturbing.
- Legal District: another fine addition to the well made areas, I especially liked how many ways you can approach Timsh's Estate.
- Summon Assassin power: I admit, I liked this one more than Devouring Swarm.
- Favors: another nice idea, would've liked more variety in the 2nd level though.
- Granny recipes: a welcome challenge and addition. Between some assassinations and sneaking, I really liked to solve these mini-puzzles, it added some very neat variety to the gameplay.
- Michael "Mr. Blonde" Madsen!

Cons, and things for improvement:
- The story didn't pay-off so well, and I just couldn't feel Daud's dilemma and inner motives very well too. I hope this will be more deep in the next DLC.
- This may be more of an idea/feature that I really think Dishonored and the DLC misses: the lack of non-lethal physical takedowns. I don't really know about other players, but this makes the sneaky/non-lethal approach a bit repetitive after a while. While there are many ways for lethal takedowns and killing (I can stab a person from every angle, with different cool animations), the non-lethal approach just comes down to the choking from the back, sleep darts, and now with the addition of the stun mines. Most of the available powers, and the combinations of those encourages killing too. I always ask myself the question, that if a master assassin can perform a drop assassination, why couldn't he just do this in a non-lethal way if he wanted to? Like dropping on the enemies from above and knock them out with a well placed, cool looking punch. Why should we always land beside the victim, choke him for the hundredth time, then disappear? I'm not saying that Corvo or Daud should be like kung-fu masters or that kind of thing, it's just that a few non-lethal physical takedown variety would really benefit the sneaky/non-lethal playstyle. I admit I often found myself a little bored with the same choking again and again. If I have to bring up an example, I would say Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory or Thief. In SC, knocking out enemies with a well placed punch besides choking them after interrogation really added some cool variety, and in Thief there was the blackjack. I know they aren't assassins, but not every assassin wants to leave behind a pile of bodies, there are those who doesn't want their hands getting dirty, and a little variety would really add to that if you get my meaning

Overall this is a very well done DLC, and I'm eager to play more! Good job Arkane!

I agree with all of the above...

The high-chaos ending (as a first play-through) felt too sudden and unexplained. Playing it again in low chaos, I could see much more clearly what the ending was doing, so that vague ending really only applied in the high-chaos version. I agree that I would have liked to feel more of Daud, his regret and his feelings on going into each new mission, BUT I know we said we liked Corvo's silence (ie we could be the Corvo we wanted to be without being directed by the game), so I can see why Daud's tale was fashioned in a similar way.

I loved all three levels. I know some didn't like the Flooded District being re-used but I did - it made sense of the original game where the Flooded District is awash with dead and unconscious Overseers. At first I was aghast at the difficulty, but it soon became apparent that this was more to do with unfamiliarity (I've replayed the original so often that I'd forgotten that I now know every guard's movements, what lies around every corner, and what each game decision will do later. In reality, it was as hard as the original game was when being played for the first time, except with a few more guards about. The difficulty is a little higher, but it was still at a good level for stealth (I don't think it needs to be any harder - the current level is perfect).

All in all, an excellent add-on that I thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks again, Arkane!

i freakin loved it! Like the maingame, this - for me personally- is EXACTLY the playstyle i love, having so many options and stuff. But whatever

I just created an account and wanted to tell u guys, the job u did with this game is so awsome. I barely played any single player game the last years... And when a friend of mine told me about dishonored, i checked it on steam.. and guess what, it was reduced to 25 bucks. I purchased,, and since then i feel like living in the world of corvo and daud.. i just dont want to stop playin.. i play every mission a couple times to see everything i can.. I want to do eveything in another way, im excited to see how the characters react to what i do actually in the game.

btw: i like the idea above of me. To add different non-lethal options would make the game even better and more fun for the stealthy guys among us.

im hungry for more. PLEASE ARKANE dont stop publishing stuff for dishonored... i need it!!! U cant leave us in the dark, refering to delilah and the outsider.. and maybe we could even see corvo again. i would absoloutly love it and for sure ill buy all that stuff just keep putting stuff for this unbelievable game out..

PS I even enjoy the city trials, although i barley reach 10k points on most of the challanges... as i said i just dont want to stop play this game.. i need more of it!!

Welcome to the forums. It's an absolutely brilliant game, isn't it? It's rare to see forums where people are just posting to say what they love about a game.

I love NOT having too many choices for low chaos actually. It forces you to plan and take chances, making the stealth game much more of a challenge than it might otherwise be. In the Thief series, Garrett had a club with which to knock people out - in comparison with Corvo/Daud's choke. Choke is harder; it takes time and you need to plan it - and I like it more because of it. The barrister's mansion in the DLC is a real challenge with all those guards but I notice Arkane have still planned it just so you can (with careful timing) take everyone out without being seen).

The best tool of all for stealth? Quick-save!!!

indeed, i believe so

ur right excellent game. Thats why i signed up. i really hope Arkane, Bethesda or whoever is responsible just recognizes all the good feedback and i hope they wont let us down on more dlc's or even another game dishonored 2. *crossing fingers*

yeah, you are 100% right about that. The more i thought of it, the more i realized all the scouting and planning was one of the best part for the sneaky approach. But the choke taking some time, doesnt discount other options. Honestly i dont want crazy karate punches or something. I thought more of different techniques, that might take time as well and need even more planning and scouting of routes. at the moment i cant think of an example so spontanious, just be creative

another point i agree 100%.. it felt like i reloaded a billion times.. and oftentimes i went completely nuts when i passed some tough situations and forgot to press F5, just to get caught 2 or 3 minutes later.. drives me crazy

Thanks for all of the feelings and feedback. We're quiet these days, but these forums are still being read, and we do appreciate the constructive criticism.
Very glad that you guys are enjoying it. I wish I could say more, but for now, I'll see you all in Brigmore.

I can't wait to visit Brigmore! Knife of Dunwall was a treat. A few years ago I thought I would never see a game like Deus Ex or Thief ever again. Very happy to be dead wrong about that.

Heh, good to see the developers around Hello. Yes, we are enjoying your creation very much and want MOAR

Oh yeah, I forgot to praise the favour thing. Even the idea that you're required to find a rune as opposed to just buying it is great, and in general, the potential of this feature to introduce some variation is huge, I'd love to see this used again and developed.

Glad to see you posting again Dan. Keep up the good work .

I'd like to see Brigmore elaborate a little more on the favour system, I think it's an interesting feature with lots of potential.
