Lantern on waist mod?

Post » Sun May 27, 2012 12:00 pm

I'm looking for a mod that adds a lantern to the waist (or wherever) of your character. I'm using realistic lighting and it's difficult to dual wield because I cannot hold a torch at the same time as both of my weapons. I'm aware that there is a "usable lantern" mod, but this has the same problem.

Something similar to this would be just as good, all I care about is the hands free part. I'd rather not use magic either (an advantage of being a Mage!).

There was a mod like this for oblivion which was great. If anyone is aware of a mod like this please share it.

Thanks!

Edit: Chesko has kindly made a mod within the last few hours that is exactly for this use. Here's the thread:

I'd like a lantern on a pole strapped to a backpack.

I loved that in Twilight Princess, and it would indeed be useful for non-khajiit, non-vampire character with darkening mod. Or just let me enchant an accessory with light spell again, like in Oblivion.

Recently I've been playing around with the "SM Drop Lit Torches" mod on my dual-wielder. I know that it's not a lantern mod, but it still may be of some interest to you.

Like most who use a darker dungeons mod, I explore dungeons with a weapon in my RH and a torch in my LH. When I get in a sticky situation and want to dual-wield I equip my LH weapon, which causes me to drop the lit torch on the ground (if the mod functions properly). Then I try to direct the combat in such a way that I can see my enemies in the light cast by the dropped torch.

Hmmmm....

*fires up CK*

Do you care if it takes up, say, your mace slot? I may be able to whip this up in a few minutes.

Edit: And to be clear, we want this lantern, right? http://i.imgur.com/77FgI.jpg

Got it mostly working. Getting a light source to follow you is a bit trickier.

What do you think? http://i.imgur.com/WFC7O.jpg

I attached it to the pelvis instead of the Mace slot, so, it won't take up a weapon slot.

Testing it as an apparel item and writing a quick script to make a lightsource follow you around when equipped. Be warned, the effect may not be perfect. I can't actually "attach" a light to the player without making them "carry" an actual light object (like a torch). So when running it may look like the light (and the flames) are trying to 'catch up'. I'll see what I can do.

Also because of the placement it clips pretty badly with iron armor. Other armors seem to look pretty good though.

Edit: It will use Slot 55, which is the slot used by Bandolier's Right Back (which is where this goes).

Ok, script written, it works like a champ. Light follows the player and everything. It's a little jerky, but that's the best you can hope for with a script-driven light object like this. Either way it looks pretty cool.

What would be the preferred method of acquisition? There seems to be quite a few "Lantern" miscellaneous items rolling around in the world that could be put to good use.

Say, Lantern (misc item) + Leather Strip = Travel Lantern at a Workbench?

That's really nice, Chesko. I think most players are going to be walking (and standing still) for long periods of time in dungeons anyway. So I wouldn't worry about the light not following perfectly when running.

Great work!

Chesko, you are god.
For crafting, I'd say iron ingot + leather strip + dwarven oil?

It is a candle lantern though... maybe honeycomb or troll fat?

Hmm, not bad. What about beeswax? The then created beeswax item could also be put to other uses if Chesko so wishes (such as adhesive or for molding something).

Almost finished. Trying to increase the light intensity. Once it's satisfactory I'll uploaderize it.

Woa! I'm impressed! It looks perfect, I'll download it as soon as you're done!

I'm sure every person who dual wields with a lights mod will thank you! (as well as me of course)

By the way, I'm using frost fall and its absolutely vital to my game now, I'm looking forward to your arsenal mod as well.

Thanks again.

So I ran into endless problems with a script-driven light, and then I remembered, "Hey, Candlelight spell!" So I utilized that effect, except made the effect more fire-like and moved the source of the light near the lantern. The effect is pretty good. It's also smooth in movement, like most real carryable lights.

I'm just tweaking the light distance now and putting together some screenshots and a short readme. It'll be up in the next hour or so.

Here's some additional screens:
