Lanterns, and why cant we use them?

Post » Mon Aug 06, 2012 12:31 am

Since DG was installed, I noticed that the new locations tend to be incredibly dark, and this presents a problem for 2 handed weapon wielders....we cannot see anything when fighting, and considering the AI's can see regardless of how dark it is, wouldnt it be great if 2 handed weapon users could attach a lantern to their armor? And maybe use troll fat for fuel? Something around those lines, because I am having a hard time dungeon diving with my recent char due to this issue.....

As the owner of a PS3 and a cack 2002 PC, I've not had the chance to play Dawnguard. How much darker have caves and etc. become? Are they slightly dimmer, or full-on 'Silent Hill' obscure, and did this kick in with the DLC or does it turn up with the 1.6 patch?

Sorry about the inquisition, but for some reason I find this really exciting; perhaps 'night-eye' may finally be of some use... thinking of which, you might want to try that if you don't mind cats.

I'd be amazed if they tried for a Silent Hill look. It'd be odd considering only the first one, as far as I know, had the really dark areas. Silent Hill 2 is more about fog(don't remove the fog... I did that in the extra options, and was unable to think about the game without screaming... That fog is a safety blanket almost). Silent Hill 3 had more darkness, but it didn't have as much as the first game.

Yes, I'm a Silent Hill nut. Love me some psychological horror. If Dawnguard has good psychological horror motifs, I better get my 20 bucks onto that Steam Wallet. That kind of horror is awesome.

This one doesn't use Night Eye much these days. The bow is too busy for this one to use night eye.

Vanilla dungeons practically glow, most of the dawnguard ones are actually almost pitch black. Was a bit of a surprise and a welcome change to actually need to use my torch.

Forget the fog... that radio 'static' noise is what got me... entirely changed my relationship with my short-wave receiver. I couldn't DX with the lights out for a week.

This one uses 'night-eye' on principle... and will even eat the filthy carrots to keep it in order. A gift should be used.

That aside, the lantern idea isn't bad, if they were more flashlight-like than torches it would really add some suspense to the proceedings. Torches are a bit too much like flipping on the light switch, and I can see how some people wouldn't be down with the somewhat 'Terminator'/NVG look of night-eye.

James Sunderland's face without the fog is what scared me more. I find Silent Hill 3 to be terrifying yet awesome. Silent Hill 2 is more like a somber horror game. I loved the radio. Haha. But not James Sunderland's face when I turned off the fog. That was... disturbing. I kind of understand why they call those options extra one now.

The whole lantern thing is actually a pretty good way of doing things. There's a mod that allows it. I only mention mods to show how things can work a certain way, so I'm not pushing it on anyone. I tried the mod out and only am not using it because I'm afraid it might make my game crash despite it being a light weight mod. It makes the lanterns wearable, which seems like how they would work in the first place.

I wouldn't mind making lanterns wearable in another DLC, just if they are special ones.

My mod, Wearable Lanterns (link in sig) addresses this issue, but, that doesn't help console players unfortunately :/

Skyrim in general seems to have noticeably less interactive environments. Some barrels aren't actually containers, some items are locked in place. I'm not really opposed to the idea of some elements being static. Still, certain items should always be interactive. Stuff that can serve an actual purpose, like lanterns, seems like a no brainer.

Oh well... I suppose instead of dropping two tens on DG, I'll have to drop two-hundred of them on a new PC, or perhaps I could spend my Dawnguard money on a balaclava and rob a bank. If there's no PS3 release by september I'll have an ironclad defense... no righteous jury in the land would convict.

The new location caves are so dark you cant see in front of your nose. At all.

I too was wondering why we didn't have the choice of using either a torch or one of the many lanterns we find all over the ground. Using a lantern would be neat, but would most likely not be as much different than using a torch. Plus a lantern wouold be heavier to carry.

but using 2 handed weapons requires you to switch back and forth during combat to torch and weapon, and when you cant see, its kind of annoying accidentally decapitating my follower.
Cool
That it is. Although as i said, for 2 handed warriors on console, its a bit of a downer.

I tried ENBs. They always make my game lag badly. Most just don't have the look I want, and the one that does(Quietcool) makes my game lag. I prefer just tinkering with settings of the vanilla game more, anyways. I do wish there was some mod that gave the game more color without making it ultra colorful. Just slightly richer colors is all I want... And Khajiit fur to be less matted.

I do hope someone figures out how to make the game have richer colors without making it look like Disney World's version of Skyrim. I already know of the sixy Cities mods, and those are too colorful.
