Layoffs at Obsidian

Doesn't seem like a stable place to be lately the Games Industry. Along with a myriad of other Developers being hit with layoffs and Game.co.uk currently circling the drain must be nerve racking to be in the industry.

Also if their cancelled next-gen game has anything to do with Fallout I will eat someone, eat them whole. :swear:

Well [censored].

If the next gen title was A fallout, I'm done with the series unless Bethesda ups their game. [censored]! Obsidian has some amazing writers!

Well that svcks, especially after getting by layoffs late last year as well. :(

Now I'm curious what the hell Project North Carolina is/was, and more than that, wonder if I really want to know in light of this.

In another article it said two guys who were hired within the last week were let go. I feel pretty bad for them.

Yeah....this svcks. One of those laid off was an Interplay vet and a lead programmer for FNV, among many others.
I know the economy is still rough but they've been hit hard. I'm feeling pretty fearful for them, to be honest. :(

Bethesda, you seeing this? Obsidian just let go of some good people. Nows your chance to hire them for Fallout 4.

If the next gen game was a fallout, I'm kind of glad bethesda will be developing it ( feel free to tell me how stupid and wrong I am) Fallout 3 was great and I enjoy playing it much more than new vegasEdit: Yeah bethesda feel free to hire some obsisian people, hopefully writers

They will be streamlined into Skyrim, so nothing will change.

It svcks, but keep in mind this happened just after New Vegas came out and people thought the DLC for it would get cancelled. Most of the people that got let go were just temp/contract workers hired for extra help on New Vegas and other things.

This could be something like it. I doubt Gamebanshee is very reliable in its info, could just be some temp workers being let go or maybe a deal went through on a project.

They hired Tim Cain a couple months ago did they not? If he was one of the guys axed then yeah maybe they have some problems.

Which is odd because I am normally "everything is [censored]" type person. I just don't believe everything I read on the internet. I asked Chris Avellone last time that happened and he said it was mostly contract and temp people being let go. It is the nature of the job, they were not meant to be there forever.

Companies hire and fire people all the time, its the nature of the game. Its a very competitive business. I will wait for more info about this before I start running around like a chicken with its head cut-off.

People panicked last time something like this happened. People thought the DLC for New Vegas would be cancelled and the patches wouldn't be made.

Chris Avellone tweeted that they only got an initial payment for FNV and no royalties because they didn't get a Metacritic score of 85 or higher. The FNV score is 84. That's messed up.

Seriously? What do subjective review scores have to do with anything...

Even if they're temps that's pretty rough.

Bethesda has several job listings at the moment, although relocating across the country isn't easy.

Like I needed any more reasons to hate the industry.

Im annoyed they canceled that other project, yet kept the southpark one. I cant see the SP game doing well.

True that. However...
Obsidian has their own forum, you know. There's more than a few on the chopping block who were there for 3+ years at least. Also, Linkedin is full of info if you know what to look for. (edit) dont think this is the end yet, but it's not exactly heartening either.

Same here, I hate Obsidian. Why can't they make their own games instead of taking someone elses?
