Learning shouts

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 1:44 am

I was doing a quest for one of the Jarls (I can't remember from which village) where I had to go and kill a dragon that was terrorising the area. The dragon was at the top of a mountain near the Labyrinth place and there was a word wall at his lair that had a frost shout. I learned the word but when I killed the dragon its soul didn't unlock the power...shouldn't it have done???

you have to manually unlock shouts, not including unrelenting force which unlocks automatically after the first dragon if you have it, by going to the shouts tab in magic and pressing X (if on Xbox) i don't know what it is for other systems

I did that (on PS3) but it said I needed a dragon soul to unlock it...I've since consumed 2 dragon souls and it is still locked.

Guess you tried to equip the shout (X on XBox). The unlock button is the same as for smithing weapons, mixing potions, dropping items etc.

Are you sure you're pressing the right button. i kinda ran into the same thing before because A which is the button that xbox uses for interacting with stuff isn't used for spending shouts. have you tried pressing the Square button, if not it might be one of the other buttons and if that doesn't work then i have no idea how to help.. srry :\

I'll try some of the other buttons tonight, see how I get on. I guess the other powers - unrelenting force and the whirlwind speed jobby were helped on by the greybeards.

Are the word walls just found randomly walking through the game or is there a method to where they are found. I killed a couple dragons but have only found one word wall with a shout.

they can be found randomly by exploration or when you get far enough in the main quest the greybeards will tell locations of some wordwalls

I have 6 souls sitting with no use, I just can't find those walls.
I don't want spoilers, but there's some kind of clue of where I can find them?

I only have the first one found on the Bleak Falls Barrow.

Do the souls save up if you haven't found words to use them on? How do you tell how many you have?

The map that came with the game might have some clues to walls (maybe) - it certainly shows the locations of some of the dragons (x marks the spot) and near dragons are sometimes word walls. (I think).

Ok thanks. Haven't done to much exploring or gotten to the greybeards yet. Tried that quest the other night but some monster on the stairs kept whooping my ass. Decided to level up a bit before trying again. Ill probably make exploring the main goal of my play session today.

It's actually the other way around. The dragon head symbol shows the location of a word wall that is mostly guarded by a dragon and sometimes Krosis/other superstrong enemy.

Also the symbol that indicated bleak falls barrow indicates dungeons that mostly have a word wall at their end.

Unlock button is square on PS3 i think. When you try to unlock a shout it says how many you have left, if any.

Almost every dungeon I've been sent to through a quest has a Wall in it. I am level 10 now and have the first push shout, the whirlwind charge shout, the pacifying animal shout, the flamebreath push shout, and now I just got the frost shout on top of a large rocky outcrop near the Evergleam tree's entrance amongst the geysers and boiling pool area. Maybe I am just lucky, so far the dragons have been very challenging for the most part, but for the last two I killed.

Ahh that would have been the better option had I had a horse then. I have one now so I guess I could but its become that that bastard is going down before I get up there. Have to save some of my ego by killing it! :)

Another way to learn a wall location is to shout in any town... eventually a courier will come to you (in that same town) with a letter from "a friend". Reading the letter will add a marker to your map... good luck...

Back to my original question and I have the answer now. To learn the shout you need to highlight it and then press the SQUARE button (PS3) to use a dragon soul. Happy days! :D
