Let's Compare

Post » Sat Dec 17, 2011 5:39 am

With all the debate around whether Skyrim is an RPG or not, I decided it would be a good idea to compare Skyrim to other games and see in what area it trumps them and in what areas it falters.

I've tried to keep the list of options to popular, modern(-ish) games, so as to exclude as few people as possible from the poll.

What is Skyrim missing or what does it have, in comparison to these other games, that makes it an RPG or does not make it an RPG?

Everything but Portal.
Fallout 1, 2, NV are the best RPG's ever. :c And Fallout isn't on there.

Most all those besides stuff like Minecraft could be considered RPGS. And that includes Skyrim, it's just that Skyrim is a pretty bad RPG, or certainly not a very deep RPG at all. Its popular though and makes money, but a real true RPG its becoming less and less.

You're only allowed to place a max of 15 choices in the poll ...

I'm trying to keep within the same general milieu- fantasy as opposed to sci-fi. Some of the games I mentioned are thrown in there as red herrings. I forgot about Fable, though. It's too late to change the poll, people've already voted.

You went as far back as FF7 and BG but left out U9 ... which kind of makes this post illegitimate.

I also wouldn't lump console RPGs in with PC RPGs because console RPGs are defined by their limitations whereas PC RPGs are defined by innovation and breaking boundaries.

Yes it is.

You just don't roll dice and fill skill boxes. It's smarter then that.

I can do whatever I want in real life without them too. You need to think outside the box a little son.

I said I was keeping to popular games. U9 was not very popular, compared to the rest of these.

PCs have limitations, too. :spotted owl:

I don't see how everyone is saying it's not? It definitely is.

Gothic? I loved it but U9 was far more popular... and it was an Ultima game... which is the granddaddy of all PC RPGs.

I put yes for all but the portals, and DA2 as that shouldn't even count as a game.

And for me Skyrim is an above par RPG.

Portal is not an RPG.
And people that say that Skyrim is not are the ones that follow one specific formula that HAS to fit every game said to be an RPG. These are typically the [censored] on here complaining that Morrowind is better, which is crap; played it for the first time a couple of months back on a friends old Box, and I was blown away by how tedious it is.

Indeed, replace them with fallout. planescape, two worlds, divine divinity, wizardy, ultima etc

Although it's interesting to put irrelevant games between the rpgs to see what people think RPGs are. IDEA! Put the SIMS and GTA in the list. I bet people will vote for them.

Everything but Portal and Minecraft. Minecraft is sort of an RPG, but all it has are enchantments and levels in form of stats and what not. When Minecraft gets another RPG feature, then I'll call it one.

I think Gothic's held up in popularity more than U9 has.

No one could argue Planescape is not an RPG. Fallout, again, isn't in the same milieu. The rest aren't that well-known.

Forgot about GTA ... It would be too depressing to put The Sims in that list and have it get votes. People have already voted. Too late.

Who the hell thinks minecraft is an RPG? *scratch head*

IMO you should have put Bioshock and S.T.A.L.K.E.R on that list. Would have really screwed with people.

Just "RPG"? All except Portal and Minecraft, obviously. RPG is a broad term.

What people mean by RPG is usually cRPG, and congrats, it seems there's not a single cRPG on your list.
