Let me see, if I understand the concept, of hearthfire?

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 11:30 pm

I'm not too sure if i understand this totally yet, but from what im seeing about the whole concept of hearthfire, seems to be pretty simple. It is basically a whole system that lets you customize your own house from the ground up right? So basically what this means is the workshop should be set up to suport this as well right?

So if the way you start it requires you to gain the trust of the associated Yarl for the plots in question. Does that mean it is set by a questline of scripts? If so, that should mean that I in theory should be able to use the workshop to then make one of my own empty plots then make a similar associative quest, and set up my own conditions to allow the player to claim it.

If I'm not mistaken this should all let us do some things we really mite not have been able to do before? I know oythers have said it before, the workshop didnt need this DLC, because we could have used the workshop, and simply done it ourselves right. well, I'm not too sure that was the case, why else would bethesda have made it. I could be wrong, but I dont think the game really recognized property the way it does with these plots before this was done. I think if one technically wanted to, they could make one plot, that then lets you build a completly different styled or theamed house, all on the one same plot.

now I do think this idea would require the ability to demolish, remove, and renovate, changes on existing parts, of that house as a convience to the player, but it does seem to be entirely doable. please correct me if im looking at it too hard, but it does appear to make sense.

NOTHING in Hearthfire couldn't have been done if it was not released. In fact there are many mods that do exactly what parts of Hearthfire does. Build Your Own Home, Adoption Mod, Home Construction and Decoration (shameless plug...). Really, all this is is a mash-up of already existing ideas from already existing player mods built by people within gamesas and released as an "official" mod.

I was assuming that the original poster was talking about the PC version since they kept referencing the workshop. In which case, almost nothing was added that players hadn't already added in mods prior to Hearthfire's release.

I am hoping that the mod community does some improvements on the groundwork that Hearthfire has laid. There is so much untapped potential for things like other racial dwellings, custom furnishings, themes, new marriage and adoption options.

I don't want a Nord hovel (even a 3 wing one), I want a small castle with a dungeon and some mines. All these things are possible, if only I knew how to mod. :P

I wouldn't get to upset cause hearthfire is crap anyway. You'll build and furnish one 3 winged house in a couple of hours.
you don't get it it's not just hearthfire think about it if they cannot get hearthfire a HOUSE DLC working on the ps3 we will likely never be able to get any other dlc

Well you have to ask yourself why anyone owns a ps3 anyway. That consoles like buying a bike with square wheels. And then ps3 owners don't understand why it won't go.

And how the hell did this thread go sideways with people [censored]ing about PS3? http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1407286-hearthfire-pcps3-release-date-thread-1/. Go complain over there.

well the only stuff that makes hearthfire worthwile is the price, it adds a small bit of content but aside from that it's nothing major and yes there are mods which do the same, some like it, some don't and some buy it just for more content to the game, buy it or not it's not like it matters.

in addition to my last post, just so it brings us back on topic, and why I did the above in another thread, these quotes actually counters and invalidates said argument excatally. also I am not intentionally flaming anyone in particularly, just ending the arguments.

back to on topic as I stated above in the OP , a remodeling option would be nice, which would also require something the tools couldnt and I'm not entirely sure if it still can do. see the whiole workbench thing, is something that the fan-made mods had to do from hacking the games engine to do. now that bethesda has put the workbench in for us to mod ontop of, we dont need to do so.

I think what is going on here, is that everyone else is looking at the whole DLC the wrong way, they are looking at it and seeing the HOUSE, and that's understandable. (the consoles versions may be unmoddable, but for gods sake it still the same damn game!!!!) but what I am personally looking at is this, it is not the HOUSE! It is the HAMMER, LUMBER and NAILS! The HOUSE, does not even exist untill you use all of those to build it, which is exactly what this DLC is giving us to use.

I say lets start bieng constructive and start building. lets figure out what is needed to build ontop of it. If for a delusional reason say, we could remodel the new houses, by even removing and demolishing an existing wing, then technically, if we consider the core concept, we should also be able to apply this whole DLC to all of existing ownable properties already in the base game iteself. Am I right?

Seems like a plus if Bethesda takes ideas and inspirations from the modding community to me.

Don't know anything about the PS3 problem, but yeah, my sympathies to folks who are suffering from that.

That said, at $5 what exactly is there to complain about? If you are a modder, then take what they've given you with Hearthfire and build on it! :)

If your existing mod(s) do similar things to what Hearthfire does, then maybe learn from it, reintegrate it, re-modify it to be even more better? I have a lot of respect for modders in general; you folks are amazing. But complaining that Hearthfire is not worth it simply because it does things similar to what some mods do does not seem to be very meritorious. If Bethesda did something you or someone else already did something similar to in a mod, then take it as a huge compliment! Maybe beef up your dossier and try to get a job as a game developer.

Worked for Oscuro it seems.

You also get to experience random raids by skeevers and giants. The latter appears to have an annoying fetish for stealing your cows

Ive had Hearthfire since September 4th and have yet to experience a single attack on any of my homsteads/characters

It's a $5 DLC that lets you have a slighter better version of purchasing houses from other jarls. It's not a big deal, but it's nice to have.

Actually, your subjective "crap" factor is only true because you choose to play the dlc this way:

insert disk, grind away collecting materials to build homestead, adopt kids, dog, & move in family. Then, hit save and quit game some several hours later--without taking a single break in between

Is it any wonder you think the dlc is crap, because you insisted on playing it with such a myopic, boring, and highly linear approach? Whenever I play a dlc, I play it as an additional feature of the main game. To me, an EP like Dawnguard is like a side quest on steroids. To date, I'm still playing that dlc because my Dovahkiin has other pressing matters (i.e. fixing the civil war, assassinating the emperor, saving Skyrim from the dragon menace etc etc.), going on which preoccupy his attention. So my Nord will do odd quests & activities in Dawnguard whenever he gets the free time.

But with specific activity oriented EP like Hearthfire, I plan on playing this a bit differently (i.e. collecting building materials/building & decorating the house etc) while my Nord is adventuring and dungeon crawling around Skyrim. If you had gradually built the house while playing the game, it wouldn't be so much of a tedious bore or "crap".

It's too bad the vanilla version won't let you take the kids adventuring with you. I'd love my Dovakiin's future son and daughter try out the enchanted, health drain/soul drinking, legendary ebony daggers that I plan on gifting them. Will just have to wait and see how the Workshop Adoption mod gets updated based on Hearthfire's new features. Might even get lucky with being able to gift them an enchanted sword once the dlc is released for the PC....

I'm going to be frank; as PS3 owner myself, the PS3 is the worst system this generation. Unless you REALLY like God of War, Metal Gear Solid and Killzone, there was NO reason to own any of Sony's consoles this generation. Sony got shafted every which way this generation; it barely had any exclusives, for pretty much every single multi-platform game it lost in sales to the Xbox 360 around the world; support for games like CoD and Tom Clancy were basically non-exsistent and Sony just made one mistake after another this gen.

Even those whacky, fun and odd one-off games that were the lifeblood of the PS2 didn't come to the PS3; they came more to the Xbox 360 and Wii! Sony fans got shafted this gen.

As for the matter at hand - no, it is unlikely that the PS3 will ever be able to play any of the Skyrim DLC. It can barely play Skyrim - and it's all because of a [censored] design decision by Sony. The PS3 has more RAM than the Xbox 360 does........but no matter what is going on, the Operating System is always using/reserving HALF the total RAM of the system. It makes it so that in effect, the PS3 has less usable RAM than the Xbox 360. And as anyone who has played Skyrim can tell you; Skyrim is RAM-hungry. It is the great devour-er of RAM. Even people with high-end PC can tell you its often shocking how much RAM Skyrim uses - and it needs a lot to be able to run stably.

This isn't a problem because the Xbox OS uses so little RAM and lets games take however much RAM they need, so Skyrim can get what it wants, and has a little leftover for things like DLC. But thanks to Sony's stupid decision, Skyrim can barely get enough RAM to run the core game properly, much less anything else. Adding DLC (particularly script and RAM heavy DLC like Dawnguard) just pushes the system to the brink; Skyrim can't get the RAM it needs, so the whole thing just goes kaput.

So unless Bethesda finds a work-around for this......the PS3 is screwed here.

Many posts refering to PS3 not having hearthfire and responses to them have been deleted. That discussion has it's own thread where you may feel free to join in. It is however off topic in this thread.

Will see. We play our game differently. I doing the civil war quest at this moment. After that I take the Jarl advice (by a letter) and act on it. I had a letter given to me by the postie after the defence of Whiterun.

Wow, lucky, I was only partway through furnishing the Falkreath one and already had several attacks on my way out of the house to visit the sawmill/quarry/smith, if the game didn't clear the bodies up so quick I'd have been armpit-deep in giant corpses before even getting basic amenities such as beds in place.

I'd also like to point out that you implied that Hearthfire would allow us to do things that were previously not possible, which is absolutely untrue. I replied to that statement, and made no judgement of Hearthfire itself. I'm enjoying it well enough for what it is, but what it is already exists in various forums throughout the modding world.

Can I just point out that "the workshop" (I assume you are referring to the Steam Workshop?) does not MAKE any mods at all, it is merely a way of hosting them. TES mods have been in existence long before Steam Workshop ever existed, in fact before Steam ever existed, and I find it somewhat demeaning that people think it's OK to refer to the TES modding community as "the workshop".
