Lockpicking, its even easier now...

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 7:22 pm

One thing that always bugged me in Oblivion and was correct in Fallout 3 was the ease of picking locks. Fresh out of the sewers in Oblivion I could pick Very Hard locks no matter what my skill, I rarely ever lost lock picks... In Fallout 3 you were unable to pick a lock without the corresponding skill at that level, which I totally agree with. However, in Skyrim, you can now pick any lock regardless of skill. Since LPing is now exactly like Fallout, I can pick Expert locks at 23 LP, and have done so for 3 so far.... Anyone else think this should be fixed?

nah I'm fine with it.You still need tons of locks if you plan on trying every side but I prefer skyrim way any time.

I find it appropriately challenging. I must stop doing it, though. It's causing me to level far too quickly.

It took four to pick an Expert lock lol, that shouldn't happen.

I do worry that I'm going to level too fast, as basically every single building I see which is locked, I have to investigate... all of them. Meanwhile sneaking everywhere - it's moving along perhaps too quickly! Still, good excuse to play a different build after.

Oh and I like the system, I found the oblivion one intensely annoying, although to its credit it was more difficult.

well that's lock depending on where is the actual opening. The skill to lockpicking is amazing if you want to open locks right away and if you're a crazy thief that's robbing every house he sees.

Maybe I just svck at it, but I find it annoying. There doesn't seem to be any hints that you have the pick in the right location. It's all guesswork. Fallout 3 locks played a certain sound when you found the spot, if your ears could hear it.

Me, too. The minigame is fun, and there's still an opportunity cost of broken lockpicks. If you don't want to be a thief character, don't spend your money on lockpicks. Pretty simple.

I DO agree that it has been "dumbed down" ... but it honestly does make for better gameplay, in my opinion. I hated in Fallout when I was 3 skill points shy of being able to open a lock. "I'll try to remember this and come back later." Not fun.

AsWeWept, it sounds like you are just damn good at the minigame. That's not the game's fault, it's yours. If you can call it a "fault". :)

The Fallout style lockpicking game is considerably easier than the Oblivion one. I encountered a Master lock with 25 lockpicking skill and took it on the third attempt.

It's an improvement on the one pick it took in Oblivion...
I'm OK with it the way it is. I think they should allow people to attempt any lock, just make it easier with a higher level.

It is harder than Fallout. In fallout the lockpick condition did not carry over between attempts, so closing and opening the window meant you never broke a pick. Also, the Oblivion system made no sense, tumblers don't slam down on like that...
