lockpicking too easy? an d a suggestion

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 11:19 am

I think lockpicking is too easy I usually can pick any level lock just by trying different positions, yea sometimes my pics will break or I will have to reload the game but usually its not a challenge

My suggestion:
they should give players an option like this -
Lockpicking Mode: Basic/Advanced

Basic is what it is today
Advanced is a more challenging puzzle, like maybe have to pick several locks at one time, or have time limit on picking, for example if you dont succeed in 5 secs the lock jams and becomes more difficult etc

If you have to reload a game because you broke too many picks then there is a challenge.

How about not reloading the game when you fail, and making lock picking too hard would ruin the game for a lot of people.
Its perfect like it is.

More of a puzzle.....you mean more breaking points around a circle? What freaking puzzle are you talking about?

To be fair! If you could pick PUZZLE doors like a certain Thieves Guild member does...that might be something

Also to add, if you are going to change it then make it a tad more difficult for the harder locks for the people are are not putting percks into lock picking.
But lock picking in skyrim is how you would pick a lock in real life. the easy locks are easy. the medium are not too bad, I make break one or two trying to get it open. The expert can take me 10 picks.
OR maybe make it so if you dont put percks into it, you can not open any locks above normal. The mini game is perfect. I though the oblivion one was crap

What you really want is to suggest someone make a mod to change it. Bethesda isn't going to change it at this point. A good compromise would either have a time limit, or maybe keep the game going (it pauses when you 'open' the chest) and if you're attacked or break more than x picks you fail. If you fail, the lock cannot be picked for say 5 minutes. This would make the lock picking tree more meaningful. I have 200+ lock picks and it usually takes me no more than 3 to pick any lock. If there were a reason other than running out of picks (which I don't see that as being possible if you are at all careful), it would make it more of a challenge.

So if you have to reload the game to do it again, I consider that plenty hard... Just because something is consistantly a complete challenge doesn't mean it should be made harder... The key here is balance. How would a game be fun if every enemy took 50 hits to kill? Not very. The key is having some people that die in 2 or 3 hits, and some that take a long arduous battle and 30-50 hits to kill. (Dwarven Centurion comes to mind) So some locks are effortless, some are a challenge, and some are hard as hell to pick. The perfect balance.

Why would you need to reload. Just buy some picks when you get the chance. It's not like you ever lose that many.

Not to mention a lot of the easy locks dont have anything great in them. Where as the ones that you make break 10 picks or even more, have somethign worth getting.

I feel the same way! I'd watch my fiance play Fallout and think, "Wow, lockpicking looks mega hard in this game, I hope I never have to do this", then I met Skyrim lockpicking and we've had a love hate relationship ever since; yeah, it's frustrating, but more realistic than Oblivion. And there's always that Master lock at the [censored]-end of the longest dungeon ever that needs to be opened! Por que, why do they do this to me?

Lock picking is annoying, making it harder wouldn't be a fun challenge it would just make it frustrating. There's a difference between fun hard like fighting bosses and spending an hour changing the position of a stick by a milometer.

Locks are easy to pick. You must really fail if you can't pick a lock. Level 25 lockpicking, I get master locks in one try. It's a matter of skill. Keep practicing if you svck at it.

It's funny, the same can be said of EVERY Bethesda RPG I've played.

Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim... They've all had very easy lockpicking/hacking. In all of the games I have never encountered a lock I couldn't pick pretty easily.

I found hacking in Fallout 3 to be impossible. I had no idea how to do it.

But, yeah, it's hard to make lockpicking challenging and fun.

At least Skyrim lockpicking doesn't screw me over like Fallout lockpicking does.
I'm not too shabby at the minigame, so opening a mid-level lock with no lockpicking skill to speak of is not exactly a challenge (unless you limit me to 3 picks or so). Thing is, I can finally attempt a Master lock *any time*. I am pleased. (I picked a Master lock with a skill that, in fallout, wouldn't have been sufficient for the second tier)

(btw, hacking in Fallout 3 is much easier if you know that <, {, [, and ( all highlight a section of text *if* the closing symbol of the same type is on the same line. When enter the gibberish as a password, it removes a bad answer, or restores you to full chances. So you guess, guess, look for the gibberish, and if you get restored to full chances, immediately guess twice. when you get down to 1 chance, exit and restart. The puzzle resets.)

Once you know how it works, it's not about the challenge, it's about luck. And even if you don't know how it works, with save/reload it's still just a matter of time until you get lucky. IMO the system is pretty silly. They should have at least made it impossible to unlock certain locks if you lack the skill/perk, but reduce the abundance of such locks.

I stopped reading after "sometimes I have to reload the game".

Of course there is no challenge when you reload a game if you fail at something. You probably don't find any game challenging then.. if you die, you just reload the game.

Lockpicking is good as it is.
