Longer days - shorter nights

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 7:37 am

I remember I used this mod in Oblivion and quite liked it. Is it possible to make something similar in Skyrim? I guess we'll have to wait for the Creation Kit.

Yeah. Needs creation kit, but should be totally possible. Just need to adjust the climate data sliders for sunrise and sunset.

It's cold. It's dark. It's the north.

That means that days are actually shorter, and nights are longer ! For realism, we need longer nights !!!

Actually, I agree a little bit with you. Play during the hours that the sun shines. And stay inside when it gets dark. With the default day&night cycle, the days go by too quickly. You can not take it into account in your gameplay. So the better solution is to make the in-game day&night cycle take longer in real-time hours.

In the console, type: "set timescale to 6".
That will make an in-game day last 4 hours in real-time.

That gives you time to play a bit more realistically. When it's dark, go to your house. Or find an Inn. Sleep 8 hours. Till 6:00 in the morning, when the sun comes up. At 6:00, go out and start doing your quests. The light will be beautiful at that hour. You will have 2-2.5 hours in real-time to do your quests and adventures. Then it will become dark again. Go find an Inn, and sleep until the next day 6:00.

This is what I do. I think it is a nice balance between being effective in-game, and getting the feel you are in a real fantasy world, in stead of "just playing a game". Good luck, I hope you'll enjoy it.

I did something like this for Fallout 3, although the actual script was written by WillieSea (so he gets the credit). It will require the SDK tho unfortunately. For now I'm making do with the console command "set timescale to 8" to stop the days and night flying by. I looked at some stats, days passed 9, hours slept 16. 2 nights sleep in a week and a bit! :shocking:

For realism, the nights would be longer for part of the year and days longer for others. It would gradually, seasonally change.

Assuming Tamriel is a spherical planet going round a star (sun) with a tilted axes (like earth) then if you're far north enough, then for about four months in the winter it'd never get light, and similarly for about 4 months of the summer it would never get dark!

People need to check out BBC's http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00mfl7n for making oneself feel extra Skyrimy

You could do longer both without having the creation kit, just type in console settimescale to (default is 30 as in 2 minutes=1 hour of game time) I personally enjoy timescale at 1 and I can simply sleep/wait whenever I want to change the mood for awhile.

And the other 4 months the sun would not exist!!

Sorry, couldn't resist :P But yes, if you are a fan of skyrims landscapes and tundras, then definately watch frozen planet. It is amazing! Massive amounts of respect for the camera crews on that program!

OT: It could be possible to make the days and nights longer/shorter but I'm unsure if it would be possible to make them change seasonally. It may well be though since the game does have a built in calendar (shows day and month when you wait) so maybe someone could write a script to hook into that to make it change depending on the month?

If what Echonite said turns out to be the case, then that would indeed be doable and would be pretty cool too! It would just require scripting to adjust those sliders every day for new values. Or, for more simplicity, maybe just once a week. This would obviously only really be for people that keep the same character for a long time, as short play durations wouldn't experience the changes, but it would be a real treat to be playing long enough that you start to notice the days get shorter in the winter and longer in the summer (or whatever passes for summer in Skyrim).

What should really be modded for Skyrim are the days and nights of Alaska so that there will be some time that they are in total darkness and some time that it is always day. We already have aurora borealis (?sp).

In Sweden where I live, I the sun goes up 7 on the morning and it becomes dark aorund 4 on the afternoon (when its winter). So actually we would need a mod that make it darken aoutside around 4 :P

I've always enjoyed slinking about at night with a stealthy toon, but I often find myself stumbling onto wild animals by accident. With a wide spread of perk points I have a hard time fighting some of them. One unlucky whack from a sabretooth or bear and I'm pretty much dead from half health (mind you, it makes combat one hell of a challenge).

I've never played with sleeping during the day/night to allow me to play under the lighting conditions that I most prefer. Just sleep to await shops opening.

Time control in-game sounds interesting. I like the idea of making the difference between RL time and game time closer together, while still seeing a full day and night in a 2-3 hour period.

You can do that. On a PC. (I don't think the console versions have a "console" to type "console commands").

1 In-game day lasts 2 hours ? Do: "set timescale to 12".
1 In-game day lasts 3 hours ? Do: "set timescale to 8".

I play with "set timescale to 6". For in-game days that last 4 hours real-time.

If you want to see what your current timescale is, do "show timescale".
The default value is 20. Time is sped up 20 times. 1 hour in-game last 3 minutes in real time.
You can bring up the console (on PC) by hitting the "~" button.
