La Longue Carabine Question

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:37 am

Hey everybody, in my next playthrough I am planning on playing a desert ranger type of character, and I was planning on having La Longue Carabine as one of my main weapons. However, I have noticed that it is seems like you can only obtaining the unique weapon by either stealing it or killing Corporal Sterling, both ideas are relatively unappealing to me so I was wondering if anybody has been able to get Corporal Sterling to actually give you the weapon or not...

Answers would be greatly appreciated. (And yes, I have consulted the fallout wiki before posting)

You have to either cheat it, kill him or steal it. :-)

I steal:
1. Steal his ammo.
2. Exit McCarran, come back.
3. Find him, pop a Stealth Boy unless you have Sneak 80-ish.
4. Steal his gun.

If you go with LLG, take Cowboy perk, you will have a lot of fun with other cowboy-ish weapons, especially Sequoia, Brush and Magnum. And Lucky .357 which crits all the time and uses same .357 ammo. And grab Hand Loader to make custom .357s. This will take your LLG to the max of its abilities.

He loves that gun. Why would you want to take it from him? The NCR even made an exception to their rule to allow him to keep it. :sadvaultboy:

Vault Boy does not approve.

I call BS on that.

A Vault Boy who doesn't approve of theft or dismemberment is not in the world we live in.

You can get it from him without hassle really.
Just make sure your NCR rep is kinda high.

Initiate combat with him, but don't kill him. VATS him, knock the weapon outa his hands, then quickly holster your own. He should be friendly, then you are free to pick the gun up. Make sure you do so before he can get to it though.

Yeah he loves that gun but so do I, and ultimately he’s not real and I am.

I own him and I took my La Longue from him.

I know it hurt me more then it hurt him.

Stick a scope on a Trail Carbine and have something better, seriously.

LLR only requires 25 in Guns so is good for levelling when you want to cover other skills first for perks. Trail requires 50 more skill points to operate, has a far more rare ammo early on and in the end has comparable DPS because it fires less often than LLR. I say all Cowboys should start off with Lucky and LLR and can safely keep them until 20s.

.44 Magnum ammo rare? Tell that to the 1800+ rounds of SWC hand loads I've pressed. Before the PC patch broke all leaver action weapons I used it to kill everything weaker than a full grown deathclaw. The Quartermaster at Hoover Dams sells the stuff 400+ rounds at a time, add in Gun Runners and Crimson Caravan you're looking at 600+ rounds every four days.

Even at 25 skill the Trail Carbine is the better choice. It'll still be hitting harder and scope sway isn't a big deal. Hell, you can find a Trail Carbine long before encountering the LLR if following the MQ.

You are wrong again - and this time twice. Trail Carbine isn't much better even at 75 skill. At 25 LLR wins clearly with better fire rate and crit multiplier. And .357 is way easier to acquire than .44.

La Longue Carabine also has the advantage of loading faster and it doesn't suffer from the stupid bug that lever action guns have.

But I though Trail use FO3 Lincoln animation so it doesn't suffer.....

But yeah, it is a good gun before Sniper Rifle.

With everything tricked out the Trail Carbine will have a DAM rating of 67 with -6DT. That DAM rating in contrast is exactly the same as a hunting rifle with JHP hand loads. LLR would be doing 52 with -3DT in the same situation. 15 points Damage and 3 points of armor penetration spreads looks pretty big to me. .44 Magnum ammo is more common than .308 rounds. Lack of ammo will never be an issue for the Trail Carbine. Maybe you are thinking .45-70 Gov't rounds here. Otherwise we're playing different games.

So what are the real advantages of the LLR? Lets see.
-Lower spread. That matters less than you would think.
-0.5x Critical Hit chance...With Sneak attack criticals being king and 100% guaranteed.
-0.5Wg less. Finally something that really matters.

Now let us take a peek at the Trail Carbine's advantages.
-Higher DAM (at any skill level)
-Higher DPS (at any skill level)
-Huge amount of HP (500) for a gun. Takes forever for it to degrade to 75% CND. Even the most lazy can keep it repaired without Jury Rigging.
-Found in Novac very early in the game. If following the plot much sooner than the LLR. Stealing it is also allot easier.

Really? I always found Vendor sells 60+ .308 but only about 30 .44

You are making **** up as you go. Where did you take .308 ammo from, have you even used either gun you'd know what ammo they fire? How come you don't know DPS on LLC is higher than on TC? 0.5x isn't extra crit chance, it's extra crit chance multiplier, you want to read what the difference there is between those. For me stealing LLC is as easy as purchasing it in a store, if it isn't for you, it's your problem not mine. Who cares about HP on TC when fixing LLC is extremely easy with cheap replacement guns which you find hundreds of exactly at levels when you are going to use LLC? Found in Novac yea but it requires you to put 50 more skill points into Guns while at the same time you could use a gun perfectly capable of replacing TC without sway and other BS penalties. You're saying it's not worth a trip to McCarran for the gun, I say it's stupid to use a gun you don't have prereqs for because you don't know where McCarran is or how to steal LLC.
