Yes, Thank you.

And Nintendo is not worthy.

I am more a fan of System shock 2, Deus ex & Arx fatalis than the ones in that picture, but they are absolutely vital to the Legacy and I am trying to get into them right now. This might send old thief fans into a frenzy but I sure wish it (Thief) had RPG elements (well only skills & attributes). System shock 1 is just awesome though! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfjIpc_Lbjk&feature=related

A nice little read, no other studio can compare to the greatness of Looking Glass, especially modern ones!

And having played all Thief games, I can see how having rpg elemts would benefit the game in some aspects, but really the game was not intended for it. The AI was too stupid in some areas and imagine how easy it would be with upgrades and the like.

Arkane, Irrational & bethesda/obsidian I appreciate, but their recent releases are just not the same, except for Fallout NV. Also Warren Spector needs to get away from the evil brainwashing of disney (its true, they are evil!), but whatever as long as he is happy I suppose.

Not if the player starts off gimped! Like accuracy in deus ex and so on.

Cool article, and very true. Ex-Looking Glass employees are some of the most influential people in modern gaming.

Harmonix is up to their nipbles in Looking Glass alum. And Doug Church, a guy who all the other people from the company rave about to this day, is at Valve. Looking Glass had a huge impact on the industry.

Also, I should point out that not only did Seamus Blackley father the Xbox (which he calls a failure for not being open enough and essentially becoming the Halo player) but he also did some pretty groundbreaking work as an agent for gamers, and helped people like Tim Schafer and Warren Spector secure some big publishing deals they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Now he's been brought on to help steer THQ away from the iceberg, from what I can gather.

I realize he isn't a developer, but I think it's a shame that Stephen Russell didn't get a nod. For those who don't recognize the name he did the voice of Garret and has gone on to work with a number of other excellent games. He can be heard in System Shock 2 and Arx Fatalis, did most of the robot voices in Fallout 3, and has several memorable characters in Skyrim (like Enthir and Belethor).

I still consider System Shock 2 the scariest game I ever played - really to bad it won't run under Win 7. And Ultima Underworld was as groundbreaking as Doom was in it's time

Or more specifically, http://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=392.0.

Basically fixes all issues the game has on current PCs. It even installs the patch for you.

No problem on Windows 7 whatsoever. I think I had even less issues with the game on Windows 7 than on XP. :P

Anyway, all I really care about is the System Shock series and Ken Levine. Two fantastic games and one of my favorite developers. I'd love to see Irrational be given the chance to work on System Shock 3, but unless 2K Games manages to snag the IP from EA then I doubt it'd ever happen.

I loved the UUW, SS, and Thief series.

TTLG /wub/. I didn't realize they had their hand in the original Command and Conquer for the Nintendo. That's pretty cool. Not to mention the brilliance of Thief and SS. And I've said it many times, the modding community of Thief is just as, or more impressive than the modding community for Morrowind, even after all these years. Very impressive.

Deus ex is pretty much a LGS game too, Warren Spector & Harvey Smith lead designer & assistant lead designer respectively, and there was a couple of other ex-LGS on the team too if i remember rightly.

Only other game from a different developer that stays true to LGS design imo is Arkane's Arx fatalis. Others like VtM:B and Fallout:NV have a similar design but a few things that stray (and not for the best either).

Mixing first person, rpg & simulation, what a combination! not to mention the other genre elements in the games.

Well, if that's the case, now we need GOG to start selling it - at a reasonable price- seen it for as much as $100!

Yeah it's a real shame. Apparently there's this big legal mess about who owns the rights to the System Shock series, and until that is resolved SS2 won't be put on GOG.

well if the various litigating parties had, collectively, half a brain, they would agree to let GOG sell it, then argue over the actual money!!

As graphics get better and better, dated games like SS2 become less and less desirable and/or acceptable

Yeah less desirable to the ignorant masses... SS2 destroys most other games, especially modern ones.
