Lord of the rings influence in the game

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 8:57 pm

I love the wolrd of Skyrim and it reminds me quite a bit of Lord of the rings. Tolkien got quite a bit of inspiration from Scandanivian myths and legends, same as Skyrim which is based on the viking culture.

- Whiterun with the hall of Dragon reach Looks exactly like Edoras in Rohan with the golden hall meduseld on top.
- Some of the mountain ranges remind me of the misty mountains
- The nordic race is very similiar in appearance to the people of Rohan. Difference is of course that the Rohirrem are way more in to horses.
- The tundra around Rohan looks similiar to Rohan.
- Looking at solitude from a distant kind of reminded of Minas Tirith
- The Rocky Plains spires area east of Markarth reminds me of the Barrow downs area
- The shield of Whiterun looks very similiar to the shield of the Rohirrem

I only visited 4 of the 9 cities yet and not all towns so I am sure there are many other references. Did you find any?

Ah I wish Bethseda next game would be a open world Lord of the rings game without a main quest line. You would make your own character and start just a few days before Bilbo's birthday party. Right from the start everything will be set in to motion and it is up to you if you will be at the battle of helmsdeep when it happens or if you will be up north helping the dwarves at that time or simply enjoying sunny life in the shire (for as long as that lasts). I would love a game where the story happens no matter if you participate in it or not.

I found some weird ring and a creepy, hunch-backed Bosmer started following me. I stuck an arrow in his face after he got me trapped in a cave with a Frostbite Spider.

Edit: Don't go near High Hrothgar or he'll bite your [censored] finger off and jump into a vat of lava.

Yeah, and then some Black Hand DB members with shadowy faces started following me on a group of Shadowmeres and wielding Skyforge Steel long-swords, was weird.

Ran into an old man with a beard wielding a staff standing on a bridge once. He told me I could not pass.

I passed.

Ummm........No, I don't see it. Just because it's a fantasy game, doen't mean it had to come from Lord of the Freakin Rings.

First MQ spider boss = Shelob

The game also took a lot from A Song of Ice and Fire series. The daugr (sp) look EXACTLY like the White Walkers in the HBO series of "A Game of Thrones".

there have been a [censored]load of threads about it and out of whiterun that is a bit similar to Edoras, theres nothing similar.

Every fantasy game/stories/whatever that are about medieval fantasy is inspired by tolkien...

Yes,but the real trend started after the movies. Thus,it's more like copying the visuals of the movie (which have not much to do with tolkien) rather than the concepts of the book.

The movies (and the books) drew from real-world mythology and design. The reason that Nordic culture resembles the culture of Rohan is because they're both inspired by the same source material. Neither one is a completely original creation.

Now can we please drop this ridiculousness? The Lord of the Rings is not the source of all things fantastical.

Visually, yes, very much so.

Fable, World of Warcraft and Kingdom of Amalur are all fantasy - yet none remind me of Tolkien or LOTR at all.

Elves, Orcs, Dwarves, Goblins, Undead, Wizards... Whether you recognise it or not, the influence is there.

You know....

All of those things were around before Tolkien. Norse mythology alone had elves, dwarves, undead (I think), and magic.

Yes it does.
It would be literally impossible for any Fantasy game, book, movie not to have some influence from LOTR since that book basically created the genre.

The influence is there, of course. But WoW looks NOTHING like middle-earth looks in my head. It just looks like cartoony cheese-fantasy to me.
