[IdeaWIP] Lore Correct Names

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 1:44 am

Well so far in my journey's though Skyrim I've noticed a few key things named weirdly (IMO), such as all dwemer items and creatures being called dwarven. Why did this change? Why did it mysteriously change from dwemer to dwarven? I find it rather irritating, so as soon as the Creation Kit is released I plan to rename anything with the word dwarven in it to Dwemer. I also plan to change the names of the high elves, wood elves and dark elves back to altmer, bosmer and dunmer respectively. If anyone has any requests just ask! :)

List:

Items:
Dwarven Item renamed to Dwemer Items

Creatures:
Dwarven creatures renamed to Dwemer Creatures

Races:
High Elves renamed to Altmer
Wood Elves renamed to Bosmer
Dark Elves renamed to Dunmer

You have my support. The Dwemer -> Dwarven change came back in Oblivion already, for some reason. And to make it more strange we can make Dwarven metals from Dwemer scrap when smithing in Skyrim?!

In Oblivion it was called Dwarven too. It's the Imperial name for it I guess. Not sure why it's also used in Skyrim though.

These things are all synonyms that would be commonly recognized by people all over Tamriel. I wouldn't get worked up about it.

Have to love inconsistency :P

I noticed that when I first found Dwarven items XD
I always used the Wrye Bash tweak to change it back to Dwemer.

Nothing important, I agree with you, more just me being nit picky XD

Well if you're changing the other mers you might as well change Orcs to Orsimers.

Except orcs are rarely referred to as Orsimer

I've always heard that Dwarf is simply the "Imperialized" version of Dwemer. So yes, it makes me wonder as well why it's called Dwarven in Skyrim as this is the home of the Nords that had contact with the Dwemer before joining the Empire.

It's obviously a small nitpick but I'd really like a mod like this. :goodjob:

"Dwarf" was the name the giants gave to the Dwemer when they first encountered each other (at least that's the explanation MW gave for the odd name, since the Dwemer are a normal height in the lore). Over time, it likely just became the local term, picked up by the Nords from the giants, and later spread down to Cyrodiil, rather than the other way around.

They are very rarely referred to as Orismer, even the Orcs refer to themselves as Orcs.

This.

Thats what I had heard as before to and I wondered the same thing, and thx :)

That would make sense, thx Jiub! :)

I was thinking of also changing the Dragon priests name to Dovah Priest, thoughts?

Wood Elf -> Bosmer
Dark Elf -> Dunmer
HIgh Elf -> Altmer
Orc -> Orsimer
Dwarf -> Dwemer

It's not exactly a inconsistency, just a "synonym". But well... It would be a appreciated mod for sure. :icecream:

Skyrim uses the human names because it's a human province. Oblivion did the same because Cyrodiil is human as well. Morrowind used the elven names because, surprise surprise, it's an elven province. It's all pretty consistent.

Both names are correct, of course, so you wouldn't be wrong to use the elven names, but it would seem out of place considering that Skyrim is populated primarily by nords, who care little for elves and what they prefer to call themselves.

no it's not incosistant, they're commonly called that.

Dwemer things were called dwarven nearly everywhere even in Morrowind, and most races are already mostly called by their other names, mostly by other elves.

Next would be to call every singular Daedra, Daedroth...

Eh, "dwemer" was reasonably common in Vvardenfell. The Imperial institutions tended to use "dwarven" though, it's true. Most notably the Mages' Guild.

I suspect that was more so due to how prevalent the Dwemer structures were throughout Vvardenfell. And a lot of researchers being in Vvardenfell researching them. Similarly, you see them called Dwemer by Calcelmo.

Could be; there hasn't been a game that allowed you to go to Valenwood or Summerset in a good long time (and... a lot of the lore didn't really get pinned down until after Daggerfall anyway), so it's hard to say if that's an elven thing or just the name people use when they know enough about the dwemeri to know "dwarf" is generally wrong (though Yagrum Bagarn didn't seem to take offense to the term, IIRC).

Point is, it is rather appropriate for humans who know little and less about the dwemeri to use the common human term, misnomer though it may be.

You could write it off as 'Imperial nomenclature'. The real reason is so that Bethesda could appeal to the Lord of the Rings, "Yay it's got orcs, dwarves and elves in it!" crowd though.

Dwemer is where it's at!
