Lost, sad looking riderless horses

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 2:58 am

This may have already been covered, if so, my apologies.

Is anyone else saddened by the riderless horses that sometimes wander through Skyrim?

Several times I've ridden the horse back to a stable just hoping that it will find a home there. Instead it hits the trail, walking steadily to some unknown destination. Then I get worried that the horse will get attacked and killed by a troll, or a dragon, or an ice spider.

Once I followed a horse for what seemed like an hour during the night to find out where it was going.

Are these horses looking for someone or something?

Maybe they are just wild, they must get them from somewhere?

When I first began Skyrim I once saw a horse next to a dead body. When I went to ride it, it said I was stealing the horse. I thought the rider got attacked, but since I don't see NPCs ever ride horses, except for L.L., I have no clue.

Yeah, I've come across a few of these before. Sometimes at bandit hideouts, other times I've found hunters wandering around the area. The fact that it rides back means it has an owner somewhere. Wheteher or not that owner is alive is another story.

Just yesterday I was out near the Western Watchtower and there was a dragon flying around. I was trying to get him to come down and play so I could go on. Well, I just started running for the fort near there (it is one of the ones you fight over in the civil war). Anyway, I got the dragon to notice the fort and it landed in the courtyard. Well, about 4 horses ran out of the fort to get away from the dragon.

I am not sure if they ever came back. I would not blame them.

On a tangential note, I always wondered what this horse's story was.

I just remembered something.

One time I was walking along and I saw a horse out in a field pawing something. I went over to investigate and there was a dead NPC. There was a couple of dead wolves, so it was the aftermath of a battle. It was real sad as the horse seemed to be trying to revive or wake up the dead NPC.

I've seen something like that too. It is sad. Lovely to have things like that in the game... I wish you could take the horses and sell them though, seems wrong to leave them in the wilderness.

You do get some NPC's riding horses. Occassionally on the roads you can come across nobles, merchants, or hunters with horses.

That's the dead horse that gets beaten in all the "Destruction is Unbalanced" threads

On topic, I have found many "free" horses in the game, typically near hunters' camps. They just say "ride" not "steal" so I usually grab them when I can. There's one I've bumped into a few times near Hadvar's Shame and another one up by Winterhold.
I think they walk back to where you found them.

Now that you mention it, I do remember one noble on a horse, but NPCs riding horses in Skyrim is a relatively rare event.

I was a tiny bit sad, and then I harvested them for black smithing leather and horsemeat.

One should be able to feed some horses and dogs food and thereby to give them a new home. Seeing a horse paw the ground next to its dead owner is sad, just like finding a dog on a street near the house where his owner had died, but the player should be able to do something about it, too.

It is definitely stuff I want to see realised in the next TES game.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has an emotional response to a saddled, riderless horse in Skyrim.

I like these random incidents while travelling, A rider gets killed (maybe a Hunter) and the horse is left leaderless- it`s one of the best parts of games like these.

I get emotional, also, seeing a horse trying to wake up it's deceased owner. I tried to ride one and it was not flagged red, so I thought it would not be stealing it, but then my stats showed that I had stolen a horse. One would think that if the horse's owner was dead, then the horse would be up for grabs.

I stole a horse once that was alone out in the wilderness, with no owner nearby. I got a bounty, but it's safe to say I took that horse to a stable so that it could be looked after properly.

Couldn't bear to see it suffer. :nope:

I've encountered them, too. I wish you could sell them to a stable. I hate watching them walk back toward the middle of nowhere. :\

Agreed. I came on a camp near a lake once, hidden behind a ridge, and there was a horse tied up, and a dead NPC laying near the body of a dead snow bear. Given the Horker meat and such in the camp, it was obviously a hunter who got attacked.

The horse didn't indicate it would be stealing to ride it, but I don't do horses, so I left it. Was a bummer doing it, though,

Today - to mock me - a dead horse came flying through the sky as if from a catapult into the waters of the sea north of Winterhold.
