Nice find. A Cthulhu MMO would be cool.

If that's not cthulhoid, I don't know what is.Is that guy holding a katana? In a cthulhu setting? That's just... wrong. Yet utterly badass.

Who would play an MMO where the focus is the pure suspension of your belief in the fact that if you're not going to die, the fate awaiting you is far worse?Other than Cthulhu fans, of course.

"I need 10 shoggoth tails for my brew. In return, I'll tell my Night Gaunt friends to fly you over to the Miskatonic Valley."This could go wrong so easily...

I'm sensing a lot of animosity towards MMOs :lol:Besides the free 10-day WoW demo, I've never actually played one myself. In a WoW sense, a Mythos game wouldn't work. I was more picturing an online graphical version of Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu games.

Japes and quips aside, I think that the two fundamental aspects of Lovecraft are:- Brooding, atmospheric fear and a sense of the unknown- The horror of discovering that humankind is insignificantAnd I think an MMO is really not the best place for either of those. A linear storyline, as in DCotE, is probably most effective for achieving Lovecraft's vision, rather than a sort of sandbox. However, if the whole thing were tongue-in-cheek, it could be brilliant. Imagine: you can be either a human playing a fairly straightforward online RPG, and when you gain levels you improve skills. Or, you can play as a monster, and you can change shape by spending XP. So you start out as a starfish-type thing (you know what I mean), move through Deep Ones and eventually become Cthulhu at level 100!And each monster could have a weakness. For "winged insectoid" from the Whisperer in Darkness, it could take extra damage from newspapers. Deep Ones might need to water themselves when above water. And perhaps Cthulhu is secretly terrified of mice.

It's going to combine mythos, folklore, urban legends, secret societies, conspiracy theories, and literature from all around the world. Notice the very Lovecraftian photo above. That picture from Cryptic is intriguing. I wonder if they'd be able to pull off something Lovecraftian...they tend to run more towards the cartoonish side.
