I loved Oblivion but can't get into Skyrim

Post » Sun Oct 21, 2012 10:50 am

Hey :)

I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice. I really loved Oblivion, it is my favourite game, and I also really liked Morrowind. But I just can't seem to get into Skyrim. I bought it on release date and I have tried with several characters, get as far as Whiterun or even the end of the tutorial, and stop playing. I just can't get into it the same as with Oblivion.

I really want to enjoy this game, so I'm hoping for some tips to get into the game world? Has anyone else had this problem? I know it sounds weird to ask but I enjoyed Oblivion so much, it'd just be too disappointing not to have the same experience with Skyrim.

Thanks x

Its hard to give you advice when you're really not doing anything but playing the first little bit of the game, you're essentially not giving the game a chance. The best part of the game is levels 10-40, when you're gaining abilities but things can still present a challenge.

Theres nothing anyone can tell you really that will change your mind i dont think, if your not enjoying it as much as you enjoyed oblivion, you probabaly never will.

I will say this tho, i didnt like fallout 3, but i 'forced' my self to play it, and the more i did the more into it i got and in the end loved it, not as much as i did oblivion however, but enough that i put in many hours.

So just play it some more, these kind of games get better the more you play, so if you do really want to like it, your just gonna have to force yourself through it and your mind may change like mine did : )

Good luck anyway, and if your on pc try some mods out!

You say you have only played the tutorial area? Have you tried to explore a completely new part of Skyrim? Skip the first bit and walk in a completely random direction and raid some dungeons, find some quests etc...

If you have seen a lot of the tutorial area before playing the game then you might have just got bored with it. Don't follow a set path, make your own :)

Well I'll tell you now, the quests are worse than Oblivion.

Other than that, why can't you get into it? How do you feel?

It's more like I can't be bothered after the first few hours, nothing makes me want to keep playing. Maybe I should do as Faraith said and just force myself to keep playing and maybe it'll get more interesting :) I know it sounds petty to say I can't enjoy it after only playing the first wee bit, I have started another character today and am determined to explore as much as I can and try and roleplay a little more, see how it goes.

I have the same issue with just about every Bethesda game personally; the first few hours never seem to stick, but after that I never want to stop. Any reason why you stop? Is it a lack of clear direction on what to actually do or something else?

I know that I have to want to play Skyrim , I can't force myself to play it. Have you tried roleplaying?

I'm never really sure how to proceed, or what to do. Nothing really jumps out at me. Is it better to do the main quest before anything else in the game, or explore, or other questlines?

How are you approaching combat? Melee, archery, magic?

Also, the moment you step out of Helgen, head in a random direction and just explore the world. To hell with Whiterun.

All I can say is, force yourself past Whiterun. You don't have to do it all in one sitting, just force yourself to play it for... I don't know, lets say 30-45 minutes every time you turn your console on. If that doesn't work after a week or month or however long, give up, nothing will change your mind.

Although I can't say for certain, I'd advise you try to leave the main quest for last (do a few to get going). I've often finished the main quests in previous games (Oblivion and Fallout 3) and then suddenly lost much of my motivation for playing them.

I can't speak much about the other games, since Skyrim is my very first TES game. I came across it while watching E3 2011. The game looked simply amazing. I've never seen a game with that much depth.

So I bought the game the first week. However, only been able to play it the last weeks cause of a crappy computer.

From what I've read about the previous games is that you had to chose your class/role at the start. Skyrim doesn't force you to do that. Skyrim lets you play the game you the way you want to play it. It can get quite a bit overwhelming when there is so much you can do and I found it hard sticking to a single character for a bit before I found a play style I enjoyed. I've never been a RPG player and my only MMO experience was WoW. WoW is a bit streamlined where you pick your class right at the start.

So that is one reason I am guessing you are finding it hard to get in the game. I suggest find a play style or define a role for yourself and stick to it.

There can also be too many quests at any given time which spoils the flow of the current quests. I recommend to stick to your current quest chain till you complete it.

Also at the early levels, say 1-8 melee and archery can be a bit underwhelming. Destruction is pretty strong these early levels. So you can feel a bit gimped. Its easy if you can find a good bow. What I did was to steal the elven bow from the companion's mead hall. It got me through level 20+. Well you first have to lock pick the case.

Or you can do one of the early daedric quests which reward you a pretty awesome 1-H mace. Its suppose to be some shrine. That should get you through the early levels.
