Low End ATI HD Card Game FIXED !

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:31 am

After much trial and error I got it working :) NO tearing NO skipping No Nothing (Mind you I have not been to wellspring yet )

Wellspring works great .... i think i have a workaround the Loading New area crash ( I'll post it at the end of this thread)

My specs ....

ATI 4 670 !!!

AMD +4200 dual core

4 Gig Ram

Windows 7

What I did
First off I removed all traces of my video drivers.

step 1
start > control panel > device manager ... Display adapters and right click on your video card, and click UNINSTALL !!! MUST !!! put a check mark in the box beside " Delete the driver software for the device"
DO NOT REBOOT !!! you are not done yet..

step 2
start > control panel > programs and features.... Uninstall all ATI or AMD catalyst install managers... When the install wizard asks you to make a choice, click on "Express uninstall all ATI software"
and let it run. DO NOT REBOOT !!! you are still not done...

Step 3
Open my Computer > C drive > and find any ATI folders and delete them... then
Open my Computer > C drive > program files (x86) and find any ATI folders and delete them ( if it won't let you, just ignore them... they will be removed after reboot)

step 4
go to http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/previous/Pages/radeonaiw_vista64.aspx and download Ver 11.6 Save it to your desktop so you can find it.

OK now you can REBOOT !!!!

Now that you are back install the ATI drivers ver 11.6

let it run.... in the meantime you can prep the game.

Step 5
Right click on the Rage shortcut and go to properties.

In the text box marked Target .... Add this line after Rage.exe +cvaradd g_fov 12 +com_allowconsole 1 +com_skipIntroVideo 1 +image_anisotropy 4 +image_usecompression 0 +g_showplayershadow 1 +m_smooth 0
(note: there must be a space after .exe )

Click apply, then click Open file location.

Step 6
With the Rage folder open find the folder named "base" and open it...
Here is where it got tricky with winblows 7
find the file called "default" right click it and copy it.
now paste it to the same folder... windows will rename it "default (2)"
you need to rename this file("default (2)") to "rageconfig"
now that you have renamed this file, right click it and go to "open with" oen it with notepad -OR- open notepad and drag and drop "rageconfig" into the open notepad.

here you will see all the text for the old file "default" ... press Ctrl +a to select it all and then delete it all.

Copy ALL of the following

//===============================================================================
// Video
//===============================================================================

seta com_videoRam "1024" //sets the Video Card memory Set this to the amount you have in MB
seta com_maxfps "20" //limits the frames to 60 can be changed to what you desire
seta image_anisotropy "2" //Using the highest setting here but you can set as 2, 4 or 8
seta image_usecompression 0
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR" //filtering for light maps
seta image_preload "1" //Use preload images when ever possible
seta image_lodbias "-1" //LoD settings

seta image_ignoreLowQuality "0" //ignores the low textures
seta image_useCache "1" //Enabled Cache to allow the textures to load properly without popping
seta image_cacheMegs "250" //Cache size in Megabytes
seta image_cacheMinK "1024" //Cache minimum size in kilobytes
seta r_swapInterval 0 //VSYNC 1 enabled, 0 diabled
seta r_useHighQualityPostProcess "0" //Fore High Quality post proccessing
seta r_shadowsHighQuality "0" //Fore High Quality shadows
seta r_displayRefresh "0" //keep it so the engine doesn't double render a frame
seta r_renderer "low" //highest rendering options
seta r_multiSamples "8" //Set this to 16 or 8 if you're having low-fps as 32 is the Max Multi-sampling
seta r_useHBAO "1" //Ambient occlusion
seta r_useRenderThread "1" // 0 Disable or 1 Enable threaded rendering useful for newer cards to increase performance.
seta r_visDistMult "1"
seta r_useMotionBlur "0" //use blur
seta r_skipBump "0"
seta r_skipSpecular "0"
seta r_skipNewAmbient "0"
seta r_shadows "0"
seta r_cgFragmentProfile "best"
seta r_cgVertexProfile "best"
seta vt_lodBias "-1" //LoD settings
//below is cache settings
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 "4096"
seta vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly "4096"
seta vt_pageimagesizeunique "4096"
seta vt_pageimagesizevmtr "4096"
seta fc_maxcachememoryMB "1024"

seta vt_maxPPF "8"
seta com_allowConsole "1"
seta com_skipIntroVideo "1"

seta cg_usecompression "0"
seta cg_useprecompressedtextures "0"
//=============================================================================================

These are my personal settings..

Save and close notepad.

Step 8

click on your start button goto the search and type %appdata%
You may need to go up 1 folder to find the folder named "local"

C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Local\
to create an NEW Folder ... Right click anywhere on the file list window and go to New .> New Folder ... Windows will put a folder called "new folder" and the name will be ready to be renamed. ready ?

create a new folder and name it "id software" (without "s). Then open "id software" floder and create a new folder and name it "rage" (without "s)
Now close the window

Ok now 1 more time for good luck and for winblows to do it's job.... REBOOT !!!! your computer You are almost done :)

After rebooting Start the game !!!

FYI the folders we created in appdata will have 2 files in it called "FileCache000" and "FileCacheHeader"

Enjoy and Happy Hunting :)

For those of you looking for something simpler, the 11.6 drivers alone will get the game working in my experince. You'll just have a ton of texture popping.

So I did this whole process, thanks by the way, and my game is playable. Amazing, bro. I do have the textures popping in but considering that I couldn't even get out of the first room before I'm not complaining. This is not perfect by any means but acceptable until a patch comes.

Now if a patch does come do I need to revert all this stuff back to "normal"?

Dual Core Intel E6750
Radeon HD5770
Win 7PRO -64
4GB RAM

Thanks again

Awesome man,you knwo what ive been sitting her thinking, maybe i should uninstall the drivers from windows also because back int he day that was the only way to uninstall them, you said that it worked so i put my and your theory together and went for it! Come to see the Game is 100% Perfect, only thing is my fps dropped a little bit like say 30-40 instead of 50-60 but i think its the config i used! Thanks man for making me realize that i need to stop thinking and just do!

My system specs:
AMD Athlon x2 250 OCed@3.3ghz
MSI ATI HD 5670 1GB OC Edition
6gb G.skill ram Ripjaws
Win 7 64 bit

This eliminates freezing,Tecture pops, and Black artifacting!

P.S to the people who still say the textures still load its how the game works with megatextures supposedly what id says..I can barely even notice unless im looking for it!

Edit: One thing i noticed that isnt working right is sound effects like footsteps and sometimes cutting off NPC's speech!

Step 5, Click on Rage short cut? Where? I right clicked on rage then went to properties in both Steam and in C: and neither of them showed me a Text box marked Target... Do you mean "Set Launch Options"? sigh... I've spent/wasted so many hours trying to get this game working...

bourbon kid - I struggled go to C: find 'steam' in program files, then 'steamapps', then 'common' - your games are in there
