Sabu has apparently turn FBI informant and is now getting Lulzsec and Anon members arrested.

It will probably be a blow to Anonymous for a short time, but the decentralized nature of Anonymous will probably mean it will continue to exist and have an impact.

They could make a tv series about all the drama surrounding lulzsec and anonymous, now complete with betrayal.

A very small impact (unless a site being down for 2 hours, or being emailed lots of gay porm ruins your life). So nothing will change.
Aside from some of them taking credit card info, I dont think they have done anything worth mentioning.

Little does sabu know, but since he was arrested anon has built a REAL Low Orbit Ion Cannon and he is currently in the the crosshairs

May he rest in peace

:P

Really though, who would expect loyalty from a loose coalition of individuals when one is facing serious penalties? There was really only a chance for defection in this prisoner's dilemma.

You obviously don't realize that if someone wanted to, they could take down the US power grid due to a documented vulnerability in the Siemens systems used in numerous power plants that ARE accessible from the internet.

Of course most of anon aren't even script kiddies. Anon is a political movement that has a hacktivist segment (mostly script kiddies, but also some very bright fellows).

Wait... are you telling me that the movie Eagle Eye was serious business?!

Supposedly the informant has been working with the the FBI since June 2011 but, at least from my perspective, the frequency of attacks has only increased, it seems he isn't a particularly effective informant. Due to the decentralized nature of Anonymous you can't pin a one single motive on them, some are simply looking for credit card details while others have causes that could be considered noble by some.

No, I'm telling you there's a documented vulnerability on the Seimens systems used at numerous power plants that could be abused by someone to shut down the plants, leading to cascading failures across the entire power grid.

More akin to what happened in Live Free, Die Hard (except without needing to explode the gas liines or get an FBI helicopter). Eagle Eye was a crappy movie with bad actors.

Not a surprise at all. There's a reason that Anonymous is called Anonymous, and doesn't have a centralized leadership....because they know that each and every one of them would rat the others out in a heartbeat. Let's face it, we're not dealing with hardcoe terrorists, but nerdy people who will fold the first time that prison is mentioned. Guess Lulzsec forgot that.

I thought Eagle Eye was a great movie. Shia's best film since Holes.

The FBI does have a storied history of making false claims about the identities of informants in order to get other people to actually come forward and become informants and to get groups to turn on their leader (when the FBI can't get dirt).

Whaaaaat ?

Although, wouldn't put it past him. His "more politically aware than thou" attitude stank of egotism. Once cornered, he would put himself first.

ON the other hand, they do have a lot of resources they can call on, and Lulzsec pissed off enough people that there's probably been pressure from above to catch them. Plus, it makes for win on the psychological front.

Still, bizarre article :
Jake Davis, 29, who was known by his nickname Topiary and was as loquacious on Twitter as Mr. Monsegur, was arrested last July in the Shetland Islands.

Topiary http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/jul/27/lulzsec-hacking-suspect-topiary-arrested, so what the heck ? Beside, the name claimed for Sabu - Hector Xavier Monsegur - is one of the many names that was said was his. I'm a bit surprised the half-assed "citizen" attempts at unmasking him should have turned out to be accurate. Hmm.

I haven't read that article, 'cause I one from The Guardian (RSS on phone = informed ), but what's strange about covering members of the group that were caught earlier? It's not like they're making out Topiary was only recently.

Well, they're not coherent about his age. Topiary has been said to be 18 years old - which his photographs confirm, now he's back to being 29 ? *shrug*. Puts everything else that they said closer to "rumour", to my mind. God knows everything and its contrary has been said about Sabu.

Or mt_pelion could be right. It'd be funny if it was.

Ah. Personally, I'd put that down to cruddy journalism. If I may make a quotation:

"Trying to be a first-rate reporter on the average American newspaper is like trying to play Bach's St. Matthew's Passion on a ukulele." -- Ben Bagdikian
