What is this game? Have the past 2 been good? Is it like GTA? Can it compete?

Can it compete with GTA? I don't see why it should, it's a very different game.

Oh those weary souls who did not have the pleasure of playing max payne 1 and 2.

It's a story driven 3rd person shooter. In a graphic novel format.

Both games were really well done.

Max Payne 1 was a really good game. Engaging story and awesome gameplay. 2 was pretty much more of the same, didn't finish it though since my friend took it back from me before I could.

Anyway. Max Payne is very diffrent from gta. While gta is an "open world [censored] around"-game, Max Payne is "level based serious business".

It's linear. Like I said, it's mostly story driven. I don't know about the 3rd, maybe there is more freedom, but 1 and 2 were pretty standard linear gameplay.

It's a linear game. There are virtually no games with linear stories that allow the player to play after the completion of the story.

Replay on higher difficulty. Repeat until you get bored.

Play the first game. It was released more than 10 years ago, so you can get it for a pittance.

Does anyone else think that in the new game http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/images/11/oct/max7.jpg looks a bit like http://images.wikia.com/left4dead/images/7/77/NickWeaponsRender.jpg from Left4Dead 2?

...he does. Maybe they're long-lost brothers in different universes? Maybe that's what the story of the fourth game will be about.

Max4Dead 3. :D

I have both Max Payne games on Steam but I haven't actually played them much. What I remember the most is jumping sideways with bullet time, and some weird dream levels with maze-like corridors...

God... those dream levels in the first game were terrible.
Awesome games otherwise, but those dream levels...

That is before Max shaves his head and starts to look like Bruce Willis.

The first Max Payne is probably in my top 5 favorite action games. It's a classic. It has a fantastic narrative and an interesting protagonist.

The dream levels were both creepy and incredibly annoying. Fortunately they're short and there's only 2 of them (iirc).

Actually in Max Payne 2 there was an extra game mode tacked on that you could play after you beat the game. Can't remember what it was exactly but I think it was a kind of ladder map type thing. Nothing too spectacular. The Max Payne series is very story focussed. The gameplay itself is excellent but very linear.

At first I wasn't so set on them making a third Max Payne, but after seeing a bit more of it, I'm probably sold. Might not be a release day buy for me though. Loved the first two, they were always great, wish I still had them.

Not sure about this one. I don't doubt that it will be a decent game, but with Remedy not heading this one, I worry that it won't FEEL like a Max Payne game. Remedy brings a certain style with their games. Very moody, and strong writing. Not sure if Rockstar will deliver on that front.

I never finished the first Max Payne. It was bloody difficult. I got to the bit where you fight the cult guys and the boss in a church but they'd slaughter me every time. And that was on the first difficulty level. Apparently there were about five more to unlock after that. :bonk:

Max Payne, the first one is very action focused. I used many mods for that game, Kung-Fu mods. There was this Matrix lobby shootout one, it was brilliant! End boss fight was a pretty good action sequence. It was a technically advanced game too, I mean for its time.

First I hate the second one but then the story captured my attention.

And we keep driving into the night, it's a late goodbye, such a late goodbye...

I played Max Payne 1 & 2 as much for the story as the slow-mo John Woo gunplay. Without Sam Lake writing, I'm not convinced it'll be quite as good.

Loved the soundtrack to 2 as well. Poets of the Fall ftw!
