Mafia and Mafia II are great (the first more so than the second). There are also a few games game based on The Godfather films, but I haven't played 'em.

The original Mafia is the absolute best game in the genre you can find. It also happens to be one of my most favorite PC games. Mafia 2 on the other hand wasn't nearly as good as the first, though it may still be worth a look.

How about Gangsters for a strategy angle?
I was always terrible at that game. The city usually devolved into a warzone, and all my goons ended up dying :P

http://www.mobygames.com/game/king-of-chicago from 1986 was the first mafia game I ever played, it's pretty good :P

It used to be a free download from the http://www.cinemaware.com/ (the developer behind the game), but it seems like they don't offer the game at the moment. Instead it just say "Coming soon!" since the website redesign back in august.

Well, maybe not exactly, but I had the most fun with "Scarface: The World Is Yours."

You could try L.A Noire.

It's not mafia, but it's set around the 40s and captures the theme pretty well.

Especially as all the strings tie together and if you find all the newspapers. :o
