Sorry if this has been done to death.
Basically I'm deciding whether to start fresh over or not. I'm currently Dunmer and I can't decide on whether enchanting armour is the way to go or whether I should ignore enchantment altogether and go with alteration instead. If alteration is the way to go I'm going to start over with a High Elf as the +50 magicka boost is just to good to ignore for a mage build.
I guess what this comes down to is does Mage Armour have a great effect on alteration spells like Oakflesh and do alteration spells block magic as well as physical attacks? If they do block magic as well as melee do they work out as effective as enchanted armour would be?
BTW I am NOT using melee weapons. Purely going down the destruction route, possibly with some conjuration thrown in. My plan is to ignore armour and weapons completely and instead go pure mage, maxing our relevant perks in restoration, destruction, alteration and possibly conjuration. This plan is rubbish if magic spells cannot give you protection against magic attacks that are at least close to what you'd get with enchanted armour.
Oh and also what falls under the armour banner? If I have boots that have an armour rating, does that count as armour?
Big thanks in advance on this
