Got through all of diplomatic immunity and when I talked to delphine to get further in the story to go find esbern the questline never showed up it says I completed diplomatic immunity but no one will talk to me about the next part check brynwolf and delphine even went to esbern but no luck. Any help would be awesome at 10mbsthe game save.

Finally another person who has this problem. I have recently finished the quest "Diplomatic Immunity" and nothing has triggered the other quest "A Cornered Rat" about Esbern. Even after i talk to Delphine and her friend Brynwolf in Riften, nothing shows up in the dialogue about that quest. It seems this bug is a game-breaker and now you can't proceed with the main quest line. I have tried everything, even emailing Bethesda, but that seems not to work. Right now i'm out of ideas to work around this bug. At least i know i am not alone.

I just finished this quest last night, im at the temple now. I talked to the guy in the sewers behind the counter and we had a fist fight then told me to go on down to the place esbern was hiding. wasnt bugged for me.

PS: i also failed to steal the ring under the stand.(big fat warrior in heavy armor) not sure if that had anything to with it.

Yeah i talked to the bartender in the thieves hideout also, and again, no dialogue option relating to the esbern quest. I even found where esbern was hiding and still nothing. I'm glad you don't have that bug.

On this one I had to talk to the guy in Riften who wants me to steal a ring for him and plant it on someone else. He will not talk to me any more about the main storyline until I do that for him.

being that my sneak and pickpoket skills svck, it's not possible at this point.

Maybe try to fail stealing it? maybe it will work that way?

Funny thing is, even after i did Brynwolf's quest about the ring, nothing triggered the next quest. I don't know what to do at this point....

How about loading up a previous save and persuade him into talking to you instead of doing the ring quest?

Too bad i have only one save file, and saved over everything prior. I'm SOL as of right now.

I already failed to get the ring and I went down to talk to him again after I did the main story Diplomatic Immunity after talking to delphine and nothing happened he just wants me to do the thieves guild quest the next story mission isn't even on my mission list and I don't have any other saves I didn't notice it till today but I did the main story before the patch came out possibly it got deleted by the patch? Idk there is nothing I can do execpt make a new character... which I planned to do but not so soon....

The patch didn't do it unfortunately. This bug happens/happened before the patch was released sadly. It's a game-breaking bug to some as far as i know. Our best bet is to wait and see if Bethesda fixes this with another patch or just simply start over (which i will not be doing anytime soon, lol...) Hate to say it but there is no way around it for now.

Well i give up trying to work around this main quest bug, this is what Bugthesda had to say.

First question, did you pick up the note talking about Esbern, when doing the previous quest Diplomatic Immunity? If not, the next quest will not begin.

Also, some people who have had issues with getting this quest have had success with just skipping it, and continuing on to speak with Esbern.

Other than that, there is little we can do to assist you, other than suggest that you revert to a previous save. There will likely be a number of patches in the coming weeks and months that will address these types of issues, but I don't not have any information regarding patch notes or release dates to share that is not available on the Bethesda forums.
