Main Quest: My Thoughts

Post » Sun Dec 09, 2012 3:04 pm

I recently finished the Main Quest for Dragonborn, and am now compelled to relay to Bethesda my thanks. I know I'm just one more fan, but I sincerely hope you folks at BGS read this and know that you have pleased a very critical, picky, and lore-anol member of your fanbase greatly. The gameplay trudging through Solstheim and old Herma-Mora's realm was top notch for the Elder Scrolls in my opinion, for more than just the difficulty. The experience and visuals were amazing. Perhaps you really do listen to your fans on some things, eh? It was definitely past time to go to weird, abyssal, and alien places again. You accomplished this and so much more. You put new weapons in the game with effects and that made my jaw drop, you added armors that were extremely well done without being over the top, and best of all you managed to create an atmosphere that isn't just another cookie cutter fantasy universe again. It finally felt like I was back in Tamriel for the first time in a long time. I went into this expansion with more than a little dread, wondering if this was going to be another "just good" expansion like Dawnguard was. I am overjoyed to say I was sadly mistaken. After doing a few sidequests and defeating Miraak, I still have a lot ahead of me. And I plan to do everything., not because I am a completionist, but because every single thing I've done thus far has been interesting and compelling in its own way. I'm struggling to evict spoilers from my post, but let me tell you the final fight of the Main Quest was absolutely stunning, at least in my playthrough, and the reward immediately following that you gave us overshadowed anything I ever expected to gain. Alas, I digress. You have awe stricken me to the point of rambling excitedness. Suffice it to say, you took a few steps back in the right direction with this one. Hell, you may have even ran a few strides towards rekindling what the Elder Scrolls should be. Weird, alien, deeply cultured, massively engaging, and most importantly, its own game. I have worried now since Oblivion that you have put too much emphasis on looking like other mainstream fantasy universes. I am happy to see that, at least for now, you have shown how wonderfully different you really can be. I would like to also point out that I never played the "It's awesome because it's like Morrowind" card during the course of this review, if it can be called that. I would like you to see this as more of a letter of appreciation to everyone at BGS for a job well done. Thank you. Sincerely, thank you. I hope to see more content of this caliber in all of your future works. You've set the bar quite high for yourselves, but I believe in you. 9.5/10 for a job extremely well done.

The amount of nostalgia I experienced after stepping off a boat into Morrowind for a second time was almost too much. My Raven Rock quests were a blur and I've had a hard time taking it all in. But yeah.. it's all high quality content and added a lot of new books along with old books for those who love lore while expanding on the history of Morrowind, Solstheim and a daedric prince. Kinda killed 3 birds with one stone in this one.

Agreed, this is a really high quality DLC. I loved so many of the things that were added, and exploring Solstheim has been alot of fun.
