Main Quest is Too Short

Post » Sat May 12, 2012 10:18 pm

Well I just finished the main quest and I got to say it felt ALOT shorter than oblivion and not much longer than the Collage of Winterfall quest to become an arch mage. I was expecting more and then bam it was over. I thought I was still at the middle. Minor spoiler about the reward:
Spoiler
I felt it was sort of unsatisfactory seeing as you didn’t get any great rewards, I was expecting something like dragon armour or at least a guy offering to make one with the right materials and a cost instead it was like. Oh well done, see ya.

I get that the main quest isn’t all this game has to offer but I thought it would take a bigger part in the game. Anyone else feel this way? You didn't even get to loot your final kill.

Although other than the half an hour long "cutsceenes" the quest was very enjoyable, I just thought I would be able to stretch it over the whole course I was playing.

I agree, the main quest was a massive letdown.

I've fought mudcrabs harder than Alduin.

If you want a huge main quest go play a JRPG like Taleso fo Vesperia.

To focus solely on the mainquest in a TES game is a disservice to yourself.

I loved the Main Quest, although you might've thought it was a let down, I think the ending was cool, fighting with the

TES is not about story, but about live like you want to live in the game.

Wow, thanks for spoiling that I won't get any rewards. Please don't make a comment underneath the subject saying "No spoilers" when you intend to do it anyways

Doesn't matter I'm still on the Greybeards part and I don't think I'm gonna go see them for a while. Side quests and exploration.

You do get some cool rewards that are defiantly worth going through the quest for, I just really wanted something like a giant sword or an amour set. But yeah sorry I didn’t realise this would be considered a spoiler, I fixed it.

I knew that and I’m perfectly fine with that. It’s just in oblivion It felt so long that I knew that I would always have something to do, here it felt on the same scale as any other quest (Not in a bad way, the quest I have done so far were also great) but I was expecting something more.

Oblivion (and to an extent Morrowind) MQs felt long but more like a long chore of repetitive tasks (go here, show this tribe/house you're the Nerevarine then go to the next one/save this city from an Oblivion gate then go to the next one). From what I've seen with Skyrim's MQ as far as I've made it, I haven't had any issue with such.

Yep, I have read the same 'too short' main quest posts in a few places. I just quit doing the main quest because of these posts, it will always be there to pick up. Have been roaming around doing side quests only.

I completed the main quest in a solid 16 hours, which included a bit of dilly dallying now and again when I got briefly distracted by something. I think that's quite a reasonable length, seeing as Modern [censored]fare 3 and other 'games' are offering as little as 4 hours of main story... which I think is disgusting. Even though it was roughly the same length as Oblivion, if not a couple of hours shorter, I think that the quality of the main story was much improved on the other TES games, and even though I wasn't a great fan of the slightly cliched dragon theme in Skyrim towards the start, I've grown to love it now.

This is not what I mean! Every quest I did in oblivion gave me a special item, be it a ring, an enchanted sword, or armour and guess what, most quests in this game do that too! So why is the biggest most significant quest in the world not give me something? No I do not want to play a JRPG.

The main quest kind've svcked in general. I enjoyed the civil war questline a lot more.

Huh. So you get Imperial Dragon Armor for finishing Oblivion, which has no dragons, but you get nothing for finishing the dragon quest that has dragons in it?

Color me confused & disappointed.

I don't get the way some power-gamers play TES, they fly straight into the MQ, probably fast travel EVERYWHERE without exploring to see the wonderful world Bethesda have created, then show up in the forums to complain about the MQ being short! Infact the same thing happened after Oblivions release and the same threads appeared! 16 hours is great for a MQ go and play FPS's where you are lucky to get 5 or 6 hours out of a game, heck I finished Killzone 3 in 5 hours! Bethesda have stated if you do everything, finish every quest there is 300 hours in Skyrim so yes the OP is doing himself a disservice, this is not a FPS or WOW, play the TES like the way they are designed to be played!

Didn't the developers stated at some point that Skyrim's main storyline would be longer than Oblivion's?
Maybe they consider the main storyline more than the main quest, like the rebellion, perhaps?

You do realize that the Dragon and the Civil War quest lines are both Main quests?

"Bethesda estimates that you'll be able to put as many as 300 hours into its epic RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. However, the company's top QA tester just beat the game in a mind-boggling 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 30 seconds during the company's Speedrun Challenge IV."
"Bethesda also revealed that the Skyrim speedrun took a full hour longer than the speedruns for Oblivion and Fallout 3."

I imagine it took longer to beat Skyrim than Oblivion only because Oblivion didn't have god-trolls that kick you 200 feet in the air.

Agree, on that. I think by now dragons are randomly put down on the world along with the ability to collect dragon-words gives me plenty to do without moving further into the MQ.
