Major follower bug with Serana, others?

Post » Mon Feb 04, 2013 2:40 am

So lost about 2-3 hours of play tonight because of a pretty major bug I found while playing Dragonborn on 360.

I've had Serana as my follower since Dawnguard, never having her leave my side. Only played a bit after completing Dawnguard main campaign and just now picking back up. Bug happened during the quest on the new continent to go into the abandoned ebony mine and find out what really happened to the grandfather of the guy who lives near the mine.

In the room before the final boss of that dungeon there were a bunch of swinging axes. Thinking a lever at the end would stop them, I selected the option for Serana to wait for me near the first set of axes (she was not touched by any of them.) There was not a lever to stop the axes completely and I went into the next room not knowing it was a boss battle. After winning the battle and doing the story elements afterwards I went back to Serana and the only options were to send her away or treat Elven arrows with her blood. I sent her away and traveled by boat back to Skyrim (didn't know there was a fast travel option) and after stashing some stuff when I went back to Fort Dawnguard, she was sitting there and the only option was for the blood arrows, she could no longer follow you!

Didn't try to fix it and hadn't made a hard save in awhile, didn't try to get another follower on anything, just went back to the hard save from prior, exit the game, and come to post this. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the heads up on this glitch, sorry you had to lose all that gameplay. It happens though, I had to go back on 4-5 hours because of a Dawnguard glitch.

There is another glitch with Serana - as she is my follower as well. If you are in combat, and its a tough one to where Serana needs to heal herself - it is possible to catch Vamprisim (a red mist comes over here) - that Vampirism is uncurable. So if you have Serana - and dont want to be a Vampire - save before battles as you may have to reload. It didnt happen alot but once I realized what was going on - I made sure Serana didnt get the crap kicked out of her and I was fine. I have had to reload a couple times since then but its not so bad - just an annoying glitch that I am sure they will fix soon.

I've had this bug too, when going through the Dawnguard questline (Auriels Bow) and I was in the "Forgotten Vale".

It seems to be a bug with Serana's 'wait' command, I.e. when you ask her to 'wait', then the next time you try and talk to her, you wont get the option to get her to follow you again. Also, dismissing her doesn't fix the problem because the game seems to remember she is still 'waiting', and so affects the available dialogue options so that you don't get the option for her to follow you.

Essentially, I now avoid the dialogue option for "wait" because it just doesn't work properly.

I remember seeing someone saying that they looked at a code log? something like that for serana, and a lot of the code was failing to execute or something like that. He thinks Serana isnt coded properly if i remember correctly.

Serana has randomly attacked allies and even myself during battle in Solstheim and Skyrim (once she just started attacking innocent skaal hunters for out of nowhere :(). One time during the main quest line, Frea stated attacking her, but did no damage to her, so she didn't start retaliating until much later. I've had to load back a couple times because of these reasons, which svcks since I hate traveling without her. Has anyone else had these problems?

I think I had this happen in the temple question with Frea - when I turned around and saw they were fighting - they stopped. No damage to either of them.

Serena kept making me a "super vampire", with NO sanguine whatever infection first.
I checked the save file, before AND after; I had NO infection at all, then suddenly had stage one vampirism
after killing the guy. This was also NOT CURABLE, with no text about being cured after visiting fallion or innkeepers.

It was mainly fighting a guy in a cave, a save I reloaded THREE TIMES before I realized that he was NOT infecting me, SERENA WAS!

I just assumed all the red "vampire" crap flying around was him, but it was her (evidently attacking him?)

After finally getting through it without her doing that, I basically "dumped her." I went to get her cured from fallion, a quest
which it DID let me do. Upon curing her, she hangs out at dawnguard headquarters and won't group with me instead.

I ended up getting that Feara, or whatever, lady in the Dawnguard thing. She can't be killed, like Serena or Mjoll, which
makes her a good follower for us xbox 360 players. I double enchanted up some of that new Stalhrim heavy stuff, made
it legendary smithed, did the same with her nordic and stalhrim one hands (I figure those are good enough, plus I read
I will need at least one nordic axe later for something...) and she seems to go to town OK.

So Frea, or whatever, seems much better to me. She has none of the hassle that Serena had, though I really liked
serena in the Ancient white falmer armor set, with that shield, that I gave her and she wore (though she
defaulted to her own hoodie.) Frea only left once, for a brief time while I was sent to do the big baddie or something.
Then she joined again after, so good deal.

Besides her, I have a deadthrall. A lot of people are too high level to be thralled, but I've found the reaver outlaws, or
whatever, are fun since they still use their OLD speech! This is a fun thing. So my reaver is singing some song about
meeting a girl, and stuff, even though she is also female. Good times. She randomly says stuff about a lady
being surprised she was hiding a knife, and so forth too.

The "red mist" bug only occurs if you let Serana get hurt to the point she needs to cure herself. As soon as she cures - the red mist occurs.
I agree its annoying - but I plan to keep Serana for as long as I can - she's the bomb and I just want to see her eyes and hear her voice.
I just save before combat and occasionally reload.

I have a followup question for you (and krommy since that's a second report): When this happened (your infection by Serana), did Serana have a Potion of Blood in her possession?

This is an interesting thread. I also have Serana as my follower because she's a bad ass. I can mostly leave many fights and just look for loot since she can't die. I do sometimes get that wierd false vampirism during a battle, the menu even says I have bitten one neck even though I have never been a vamp and certainly haven't bitten anyone. When this happens I reload an earlier save. I also wish they'd fix that voice commands don't work on her. No "ally, wait" command.

I have had no problems asking her to wait via text options. Have done so dozens of times. I even dismissed her and got another follower just so I could have a steward at Lakeview and was able to get her back with no problems. I'm sorry so many seem to think Serana is highly glitchy but that has not been true for me. Maybe it was some choice path you made inDawnguard?
