[Reqz] Make Ovens Function Like Campfires

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:42 pm

Is there someone who would be willing to do this? I don't mind using campfires - but it does seem somewhat silly that these ovens in houses have pilot lights and such but we can't use them to cook in.

I'd be up for some balance issues such as needing a metal pot/pan in inventory to use them; or requiring them to be repaired on first use via some scrap electronics or fusion batteries or somesuch - but an oven would make a bolt-hole in the wilderness much more functional to me. Of course, I could always turn the couch into a campfire ...

Suggestion:

Check for a pilot light in the oven, and fail to function if not!

I suppose there might be a (small?) chance to break it, as they are quite old...

Heh, even a small chance (based on some skill?) to "blow" and destroy the food, and set you on fire for a bit of damage (like an incinerator blast?). It would be funny, at least.

I did this in my house mod, look up Welcome Home on the nexus. All I did was make a new form and add the campfire script to it, worked like a charm.

i was wondering about that myself. im still waiting for a MEGA SUPERhardcoe hardcoe mod that gives you the option to either drink out of a toilet or use it for its intended purpose.

Realistically speaking, wouldn't a gas oven need gas? I could accept having a system to repair ovens, maybe with flamer fuel or something, but generally a wasteland oven shouldn't work for crafting IMO.

I'd like to add fireplaces to that list of cooking areas. Fireplaces like you find in some homes around the wastelands.

Obviously they must have gas here and there on the wastelands as you find cooked squirrel and what not in many ovens. Yum.
They use gas cylinders on those flame throwers too.. so ya don't have to imagine too hard to visualize the concept of cooking in ovens.

This sounds like the kind of project I'd like to do. Complete with a repairing requirement, the need for a pilot light (if it's not in there already) and one flamer fuel ammo, and with a randomized chance that the oven is fine and doesn't need repairing, an/dor already has gas. That could be based on Luck, too.

I'll get on it! :D

When the player finds an oven, there are two things to worry about:

-Is it broken or not: If it's broken it needs a repair skill of 50 (maybe a survival skill of 50 would work too?) and a Pilot Light to fix it.

-Does it have gas: Needs one flamer fuel unit to refill if it doesn't.

What do you think, for a player with an average luck, that the chances should be of finding an oven that is not broken? What about the chance that it has gas in it? Also keep the above requirements for fixing them in mind.

The script won't take in account that an oven might be in a house that is inhabited by NPCs, and is assumed to be working for them. So in the mod there are equal chances for all ovens. Still, just imagine that these ovens are in abandoned houses and have not been used recently.

I might change it so that you can only use ovens that aren't owned by anyone. Other than that and tweaking the chances the mod is pretty much done.

@Morili - I noticed that! Nice work on the house btw. :)

@povuholo - I think it's a great idea. I also like the need for them to be non-owned so one needs to work a little bit harder to find one (not that they are exactly rare) and it seems more natural than just showing up in someone's house and making an sandwich. I'm looking forward to checking it out in game!

Any thoughts about the chances?

30% chance for it to work (someone was right about it being a wasteland) increased by 5% per point of luck? So even if you max out your luck, it's not 100%.

I think I got it pretty balanced now.

About the ownership thing, many cells are owned by NPCs or factions so if the player could only cook on ovens that are really owned by nobody, then the selection gets quite a bit smaller. And if you then take in account the chance of them not working... So I'm leaving the ownership thing out, you'll be able to use any oven, when they work.

Release is probably tomorrow, unless I can make it later today. I'll release it simultaneously with the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1128480-wip-distant-gunfire-sound-fix/page__p__16552454__fromsearch__1&#entry16552454, another mod I finished recently.

I made this for my little house mod in Novac (creating a new campfire but using the Oven model instead), it works great. :) Its definitely nicer to have an oven next to my storage cabinet (changed and moved it) so that I can store all these darn reagents and get them out as I need them, cook-em up on the spot and go.

I'm sure this will be very popular Povuholo! Especially with the additional cool your adding.. :goodjob:

When I make something I want to go all the way. So repairing/refueling and failing to meet requirements uses a couple of sound effects as well. :D
