Making Keys

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 1:16 am

Apparently one of the perks in Lockpicking skill tree is the ability to make a key for any lock you have picked. If you are able to pick it why would you need a key for it?
Please discuss in the most hostile way possible :toughninja:

Because using a key is easier than picking a lock.

Maybe picked...things can become relocked. So, there's a perk you can get that makes a key for locks you've picked, so you can bypass picking the lock again.

I think what he is saying is, usually after you pick a lock, it remains unlocked, so therefore why would you need a key for said lock? I agree, it doesn't make much sense to me...

That makes sense. However if you were able to pick it the first time... I realize that using a key would be easier, but considering that it will eat up a perk, seems like a waste.

Perhaps picking a lock which requires the key "Solitude Castle Key" and the make a copy of it could be useful, since I imagine that there are other locks in that castle where you can use that copy-key?
At least that's how I hope it works :P

Doors that are unlocked in the morning and locked at night have a sort of script attached to them to simulate owners of warehouses, stores etc. making sure their businesses are safe. So wax keys should be useful.

Seems like you can, although, the key being made out of wax perhaps there's a limit of times you can use it

If people can re-lock doors, then its kind of useful. Otherwise? Useless.

Remember in Oblivion people locked their doors at night?

Pick someone's front door and you essentially get a key to their house.

I'm just going to assume NPCs will lock their houses next time they go to bed.

However, if picking locks grants experience, the perk is still useless...

I was hoping it was a master lockpicking perk that allows us to wax doors that require a key..
You know, make a mold so you don't have to (or if you can't) pick it..
The way its done IRL..

I don't understand this perk.

You mean if I pick the door to someone's house, the key to that house will magically appear in my inventory?

As long as you are not forced to use the key it will be decent though unneeded perk. If you are forced to it seems like it would hider leveling the skill as you would key your way through doors you would have picked otherwise. Hey maybe it will let you lock doors as well.

If locks re-lock, wouldn't you want to pick them again to get more XP? It seems that making a wax key would limit your ability to advance your lockpicking skill. Definitely gonna be the LAST lockpicking perk I'm going to choose.

Anybody think about the Radiant AI/Story? What if you leave/give a copy of the key near an NPC with low responsibility (say a Thieves Guild member)? Will they use it to break into the house? Can you give it to a companion so you can tell them to open it?

No you make it i believe (please correct me if im wrong) which you dont do when you pick the lock you do it later

this perk seems helpful when you lose picks and if you get xp for making keys
