Making a WoW clone in the TES universe will fail

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:24 am

If you're going to just clone existing MMOs and put TES lore on it, at least differ from what we're all tired of, make a game with an open world ala existing TES games, with the modability of existing TES games and Minecraft. Or do something innovative. WoW and SW:TOR pretty much have the formula done and we're tired of it.

Agreed. Free to play or servers shut down within a year. Waste of time, money and effort on their part.

If you're going to just clone existing MMOs and put TES lore on it, at least differ from what we're all tired of, trying re-using:

- WoW-type UI
- GuildWars (1&2)-type skill deck hunting and building
- GW2-type discoverable dynamic questing
- Rift-type... rifts (called anchors)
- DAoC-type 3 faction combat for control
- old-school EQ/DAoC/etc. public dungeons
- ... plus WoW-type instanced dungeons with heroic mode
- TERA style combat

but if you wanted to be original with an MMO, make a game with an open world ala existing TES games, with the modability of existing TES games and Minecraft.

+1 but it'll never happen.

Which MMO UI featured the modability of WoW's UI?

I haven't seen any that discussed the business side of whether creating a WoW clone will damn the MMO to being a failed business.

Good thing this game isn't a WOW clone. It has some common MMO features, true - but that doesn't make it a WOW clone. They are doing so many other things right, including many things you already mentioned: public dungeons, dynamic quests, huge open world where you explore and aren't tied to a quest hub, persistent PVP area in the center of the world to keep the end game fresh, I could go on and on. Look at the article with a different lense and have an open mind.

These are the things that makes me really nervous...

Public Dungeons ... I assumed this was the norm, instead it is an exception... so .. there are "some" public dungeon .. the rest will be instanced
Persistent PVP area... why an area? Why don't make it the whole world. That way we have Happy candyland in the whole map except for that single point in the map where all hell break loose
Where is the middle ground? Where is the area when you face another player and you are unsure of his intentions? You don't know if you can trust him?
This way we have PVP not allowed except for the "Frustrated PKs Area"

I know it brings some new and interesting spins to the table, but at the end of the way the fundamental way of running around third person with a hotbar is the same old same old.
