Mass Effect... Movie?

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 6:48 pm

So as I was surfing IMDB, as I usually do at work, I stumbled across the 21 most Anticipated Movies For 2012.

If you go to number 8 you will see that the spot is taken by nothing other then a mass effect MOVIE.

Now I'm not sure if they are meaning a Mass Effect 3 trailer or if there is an actual movie coming. I am thinking it is a movie since it is in the Most anticipated movies article and all the other titles are actual movies.

What are your thoughts? if there was an actual movie made, would you actually watch it? For me, I'm not sure if I would, because I'm not too fond of the Mass Effect series, but who knows?

Here is the Link- http://www.imdb.com/list/v4qn1bEcqgs/

I have nothing good to say about the idea of a Mass Effect movie. Bioware can't even seem to keep the universe internally consistent in the supplementary books. What garbage will they throw out on celluloid? I also have a feeling that, while we're content, or even rave about, the standard of dialogue and story to be found in Mass Effect, actually translating this style to the big screen would make for unintended laughs. The Fifth Element managed to pull it off because it was altogether more campy; Mass Effect will implode under its own self-importance.

Why is a new Ghost Rider anticipated at all?
The Bourne Legacy seemed bad to me at first without Matt Damon, but with Edward Norton and Jeremy Renner, it looks pretty good.

Mass effect is already a movie, it just forces you to play a mediocre shooter in between scenes.

Honestly I am thinking the same thing. I think that the Mass effect series has already done enough and is desperately trying to find ways for more spotlight. My guess from the first announcement of Lucas retiring has been that it gave competitors some motivation to better his Star Wars series. And so far I'm thinking a Mass Effect movie is one of the first attempts.

I have no idea... The first one was ok for the first watch, but after I grew up a little Nicholas Cage has annoyed the crap out of me.

I'm excited to see what Edward Norton can do. What I am pissed off about right now is that he isn't in the Avengers movie. That is one strike against that movie for me. My only guess is that Norton didn't want to do the movie, because any producer would be stupid not to ask him.

I'm interested, I desperately hope they don't butcher it.

Don't really give a damn. It'll svck because all video game movies svck (look it up, it's one of Newton's laws), and I frankly have long lost interest in Bioware as a whole.

Yeah, that's going to happen.

EDIT--

God, just look at that list! Ghost Rider 2? Resident Evil? Battleship?!

Battleship?!
It's a sad era in our society when Hollywood resorts to boardgames for movie material. :sadvaultboy:

Battleship?!

i saw the trailer for that in theatres, i laughed my ass off when i saw it. if they are going to make a movie about a board game they should at least maybe consider remaking jumangi or however it was spelled.

also, there have been some good movies based on video games. i need a moment to remember one that is very difficult to dispute, but i will throw the resident evil movies out there. i know that not every one thinks their good but i did enjoy them, the 2nd one mostly.

the shooter components are being improved yet again, and ME2 was a big step up from ME1

Looks like it will be on par with Gears as a 3rd person shooter with, presumably, proper dodging and cover snapping, and no limit on sprint. (seriously, who can only sprint for 5 seconds?? I'm out of shape and I can sprint a couple minutes at least FFS)

Can't wait for the demo on the 14th :D

OT: I wouldn't have high hopes for a ME Movie.... most movies are garbage so it's chances are extremely slim IMO... doubly so for trying to translate from another medium

As a video game, ME universe works WONDERFULLY....

I have NO interest in reading it's books however (not surprised to hear they're trash novels, I glanced at War40k and Halo novels and they also seemed like trash) and I doubt the movie would be much better.

It's just rich executives trying to cash in on their money cows in every way they can....

For the record, I HATE executives.

No passion... no direction... just greed. It's always money with these people and never quality.

The latest book is trash. The others are okay. 4-6/10 affairs. Depending on how much you enjoy the setting and lore. Nothing brilliant and award winning, but certainly there have been worse. Warhammer 40k novels range the gammut from 3-8, it's more dependant upon the author. In general though they're likely to be in the 4-6 range. Just average books for average fans. That is all I can say on that matter.

Personally I think ME would work fine as a movie. Now they just have to do it right. Also calling ME a movie with shooting bits inbetween is pretty bad logic. Any game could be broken down enough until its a completely different media. What sets games apart is that they do in fact have things you have to play as oppose to watch.

Pacman is just a glorified boardgame once you get rid of the joystiqs and it being on a computer screen.
Total War is just an extensive set of maps with figures you push accross it once you get rid of all the ineractivity.
Call of Duty is just a generic war film with shooting bits in between.
ect, ect.

Actually the armour in game is described as very lightweight, and I would expect it to be. It's not able to really be effective against something as strong as a round fired in a mass effect field. I know for sure it's much lighter than kevlar of today. It's often described as being lucky to stop even a round. Obviously for in game purposes this isn't so, but if you play on insanity you wont take more than a few hits with your "health". As opposed to barriers. The armor in game is so lightweight biotic all stars use the blood dragon armor in sports. So no, it isn't too weight excessive. How heavy is it? Well base don the fact that the sport sounds like it involves at least some endurance, I can imagine it not being all that heavy. I'll say the average armor the completely body suit would have to be under 8 kilograms. Mind you that's for the bulkier suits. The N7 armor looks like it can be might lighter under 4-5 kg easy. Combine this with the fact that all marines go through genetic screening processes to ensure greater performance. Then Shepard was also N7, so I imagine he was subject to a greater package. Then to top it all off Illusive man rebuilds him with some high tech experimental stuff likely far in advance of anything current in the me universe. Not to mention cybernetics. It seems quite hilarious Shepard can only sprint for 5 seconds. Of all people and universes, it doesn't make a lick of sense.

I agree that the most anticipated movie list is pretty... well... horrific. there are only a couple of those movies that I am going to see on that list, and the others just scare me. If these are the most anticipated movies coming out, then 2012 is going to be another slow movie year.
