Master Spells Seem a Little Weak, No?

Post » Tue Sep 04, 2012 2:43 am

I've brought this up before but it went nowhere.
I've had a pure-mage character before and worked pretty hard on it, reaching level 100 in Destruction Spells but... they feel so weak. Like really, the spell Blizzard, it's not easy to get and when used it does more damage to the items in the cave than the enemies I'm fighting. Sure, if you manage to find a scroll for it and use it at any level below 30, it might kill your enemies but when you actually own the spell, which for me was when I was level 50 or so, the enemies are a little tougher than before. Not only does it not kill any enemies anymore (for a bloody master spell it should kill all my enemies) but it's also so bloody slow; it requires two hands to cast and it takes like 7 seconds or so to power-up, by then every enemy in the room has probably hit me 3 times each and being pure-mage my armor isn't that great either, I'll probably die before getting to use it.

I request that Master Level Spells get tweaked and maybe add a few more.

Double Shock does Damage.

So does Multiple Spells

I don't understand your argument. What is "Double Shock" the Master Level electric spell that is basically a laser-pointer? That's the only master spell I use but it's not the hardest to obtain, isn't that a little weird? My point is, master level spells are way too weak for being "master level spells".

Some Spells are Stronger, and they are Weaker Levels.

Yes i think some are weak.

Some spells are really good, master illusion, lightning storm, fire storm isn't bad, mass paralysis, dragonskin, I think blizzard may be glitched though, It's supposed to do 20 damage a second for 10 seconds, but like you said when I use it, it seems like things just spin around a room and enemies lose almost no health. Seems to do the same for me.

Nord = frost resist, maybe? Most of my mage characters never bother to learn frost-based spells being that, well, it IS Skyrim and many people/creatures would naturally have frost resistance and others would probably be carrying potions thereof.

I agree that all those spells you said are good because they're obtained when you're higher level but again, they shouldn't be master level... I've used Firestorm and I fight draugr death overlords, one using an ebony bow that which a single arrow instant kills me because I'm too busy using both hands to cast Firestorm, that which uses at least half my magicka and basically just makes them stagger, then I have to stand in one spot for another 8 seconds trying to cast it again hoping that it might bring them to at least half health this time around.

Sounds like you need to rethink tactics, gear, potions, etc. You can't stand there like a tank-warrior or dance and plunk like an archer. Mages need to use mage tools... mage armor, calm, fear, fortifies, staves, perked regen, damage, etc. And use your head more than your fighting skillz.

... you are unable to move when casting a master level spell and spells like Firestorm are fairly close-range, so I would have no other option than to stand there like a statue.

The most reliable way for a mage to deal damage and survive is to use expert level destruction spells. With expert level spells, you won't get stuck with the god-awful casting time and you can keep dodging incoming attacks. It svcks that master destruction spells are practically useless at higher levels, but that's how it works in this game. You could make potions to increase the damage of your spells, but it can be very annoying having to constantly stock up on them since you'll be chugging a few before every other fight. Your only other option is enchanting gear to give you free destruction spells, which obviously won't change the fact that your spells won't even put a dent in a mini-boss.

Conjuration can help quite a bit, especially considering that your summons can match, or even outmatch your DPS.

back in oblivion if you had a spell that costed as much as those worthless master spells skyrim has it would kill your enemy and it would actually cast when you wanted instead of having to wait forever with a horde of angry draugr stabbing you

The master level spells aren't weak... they are pitiful.

Firestorm: In the time it takes to cast this(while standing still) you could have casted multiple dual cast fireballs(adept spell) netting around the same damage and stun locking any enemy directly hit.

Blizzard: I've actually used this once. I used guardian circle at the edge of a doorway leading into a room full of undead so that the circle was lined up with the doorway. Then I cast blizzard repeatedly into the room. The undead all got stuck in the doorway and froze to death(again). Now the fact that is the only time I have ever used it, and that fireballs could have done the same thing says a lot about what I think of this spell.

Lightning Storm: LOOKS AWESOME!! And that is it. Damage per second, usability, stun, fast casting, mobility, etc..... Dual cast thunderbolt > Lightning storm.

IMO dual cast thunderbolt fully perked is the peak of a destruction mages powers. Which is not a bad thing, 200 damage + magicka damage + instakill at 15% health with no projectile lag time(flying dragons? like candy from a baby), while still being very mobile while casting, plus stagger is not a bad thing.

Either slow time or become etherial will definitly help with charge up for master level spells. Myvage uses a three word slow tine and during it I can usually get off two master spells before the time flow goes back to normal. Mass paralysis and fire storm make a good combo for something like that.
