Mega Server and unique character names

Post » Wed Jan 23, 2013 3:15 pm

Did a search couldnt find anything specifically about this.

How are Zenimax going to handle unique identifiers for each toon we create. I like the idea of a mega sever, but it does present an issue in regards to naming our characters. It will not take long for names to be used and as time goes on will be much more difficult to name your character.

What ideas to you all have in regards to making this a bit more manageable for naming other than just going with a unique first name?

Options:
  • Unique first name
  • Unique combination of first and last name, i.e. Valias Stone would be a unique name and you could still use Stone Valias as a unique name because of the switch in position
  • Like TSW with a 'handle' as a unique identifier so you can still choose a first and last name which may be the same as other peoples toons
  • Unique identifier which is not seen on screen, perhaps your login name with a #1234 after it, each toon can have whatever name but they're all connected to that identifier.
I personally like the first & last name combo.

Your thoughts?

I think the best thing is definitely, your name is never taken away from you, beause of server merge or character transfer. In my opinion question is quite simply, how many player can use same name, because for them its easy to put them in different instance.

Speaking of names, if you see player named as "Death Troll666" you can just put him in ignore and never see him again, thats so great about megaserver.

I wonder which will be exclusive?

In FFXIV for example, you could have two bluesnacks, so long as they had different surnames. Hopefully it won't be like TOR, where EACH name must be unique, and then you later on have to pick a legacy surname which ALSO has to be unique. Or did.... not sure if it's still that way.

Also might just be the combination of both that's exclusive (so anyone can use any name so long as the entirety isn't the same as another).

Here you go:
Lastly, due to the megaserver technology, characters require both first and last names, where only the combination of names is uniquely reserved.

I would never allow two bluesnacks :o

That was my assumption.

Such as Amaraz Indobar, Amaraz Heliesh and Ashurbinapal Indobar could all exist in a single shard/instance with no problem.

Eh... I'm kinda iffy on someone running around with potentially the same last name as me who's not a part of my character "family". But oh well, luckily I pick pretty unique names for my characters.

Very unlikely.

However we might get lucky and be able to use special characters in our names like ' or -

I read you could only use one - so we won't get names like Dave-the-Rave-Scoobysnacks and so on.

Here we go, found a good link for naming info - http://acolytesguild.wordpress.com/2012/10/22/elder-scrolls-online-preview/

Character Customization:
  • First/Last Name: During character creation, the player will have the ability to enter both a first and last name for their character (forming an unique server combination). The naming guidelines: At least 3 letters long, starts with a letter and ends with a letter. No more than 2 of the same letter in a row. One hyphen or apostrophe at most.

I'd fancy the ability to hide surnames if possible, and just have your first name over your head. In chat your surname would still show to differentiate you, but I don't like loads of letters over my head.

Agreed, having a toggle for names, titles, guild name etc would be good.

Just because they have the same last name doesn't mean they're family. Just like in the real world, two people can have the same last name but be unrelated (similarly, people with different last names can be related).

Though I wonder how it will work with Argonians and Khajiit. They don't really have a last names.
