Mega Servers, am I missing something?

Post » Sun Aug 25, 2013 12:23 pm

As I understand it rather than having many servers, TESO has one, well, mega server. Players are then put into different worlds(instances) This fixes low populated serers, overpopulated servers etc, but personally as a player I see more downsides than upsides.

Because there is only one server there won't be a PVP server, PVE server, RP server etc Because of this there won't be open world PVP and trying to RP on a normal server probably won't be a great experience.

Apparantly because of the big megaservers, normal auction houses won't work and thus we have guild trading, which is obviously terrible compared to the real thing.

So basically, what makes the mega server so great? Because I'm not seeing it.

Well the megaserver allows you to play with those who you may have the most in common with. As for the rulesets, there is only one ruleset regarding PvP so that's sort of a non-issue. The game was designed from the ground up as AvAvA as opposed to open world with sporadic siege PvP. RP can be most easily facilitated because (hopefully) you'll be matched up with other RPers.

As for the auction houses, i'm not really sure how it'll be implemented but I can definitely see how it could appear problematic.

I suppose the bottom line is that the megaserver is there to allow a much easier way of meeting players without having to worry about full servers, or empty ones, etc. I'm sure there are other posters with a greater depth of knowledge on it than me though.

it is explained in the games com interview with Maria and Lizzy.

You WILL answer some questions when you make your first character and those answers will affect how the game tries to instance you. The Questionnaire is back apparently.

you never have to worry about being on a different server than your friends. Nor about an empty one. DCUO and STO have a mega server and people RP just fine, and actually they both have areas specifically meant to cater to JUST RPer or to people who care about the scenery. (besides the occasional flirt with female character who is really a guy who does is not roleplaying).

I hope it's specific...for example, I want to do RP mostly, but also want to do solo PvE stuff and some PvP eventually...so I would like to do all three, but RP is my main focus. I hope it'll let us choose priority.

That sounds good, if it works well the mega server suddenly become a lot more appealing.

Indeed but from my experience on RP servers(The grant total of... One, good old Argent Dawn), those same people will be into PvE and PvP as well so it shouldn't be a big problem.

I care about PvE. Never liked PvP.

I've heard the positive and the negative regarding this. Hopefully this works out well.

Thats why the PvP is only in Cyrodiil. No need for PvE or PvP servers when you know exactly where you can go to engage in either of those playstyles. Cyroddiil is a huge zone that is open world PvP, there will also be PvE stuff to there so you cans till get the open world danger aspect while questing in Cyrodiil.

A main draw I see for it is being able to easily connect with anyone who plays the game. Instead of having to pay $25 to move to a new server or having to re-roll a brand new class you can just click a few buttons and join with your friends or whoever.

Get PvP guild members to pick RP and PvE to dominate the weaker Cyrodill slices. Still would work, right?

Except you get placed in one 'campaign' over Cyrodill, and you can't change that one easily.
