The character I'm planning to roleplay as will be a mercenary but I doubt it'll be profitable.
I don't see how you can really play a Mercenary in a game with a mandatory faction membership.
Are you talking about "bodyguard" or something like that?
For one you can see it as the faction hiring you to fight in the war and then you can take other jobs from citizens and the like.(Including players)
I can see this happening, especially for tank and healer positions for dungeons. Assistance with quest will probably happen too, but a well-geared tank or healer for dungeon carries is probably going to be more common.
Why not just ask guildies or friends, who would do it for free?
I think doo's scenario (asking friends/guildies/strangers who'll do it for free) is more likely. I'm still utterly charmed by the idea, though.
We have got a mercenary guild planned

Unfortunately we lost my favourite where its thoroughly explained how my werewolf character ate few knights in heavy armor and suffered terrible stomach ache. When this unfortunate condition finally passed next morning and Rage finally enjoyed the luxury of oathouse, it resulted into unforseen effect ... and thats how artifact known as Lords Mail came to be
I've played enough MMO's to know these things don't happen, only thing I saw people do for money was boosting other characters.
I've hired mercenaries for forum RPs before. But that's a totally different thing. (The forum did have "in-game" currency, though.)
