Mesh Conversion? Possible?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 12:05 am

I want to know if there is a simple way to get the in_dwrv_corrxx tileset from Morrowind converted over to Skyrim. I'm trying to reconstruct the Dwemer ruins from Vvardenfell to aid in any future expansion projects, but I lack the proper tileset. Using nothing but the Plat_Mid and piping, I reconstructed the basic hallways from Skyrim's set, but can't get stairs... which are crucial. I can rebuild most of the ruins with just the facade_hall_xx stuff, but it just doesn't look the same. Anyone out there up for helping me?

P.S. If it helps, I was able to use the LgHall and LgRoom tileset to rebuild Bamz Amschend as a single cell. Works pretty well, actually :)

It is possible by extracting the mesh from the Morrowind model as .OBJ and importing it into a Skyrim model - search the forum for Nifskope.

What you plan is not legal, though. neither by forum rules nor by copyright law in most countries.
Modders may allow you to use their assets from other games as you please, Bethesda doesn't.

*palms his face* :swear: Why is everything illegal? Seriously? So are there any modders out there who want to take a stab at recreating the Dwemer meshes?

*I'm not a lawyer or anything, but this is my understanding of it*

The issue with transferring game assets is that they are only licensed for that one game. Lets say I'm making a game. I may hire a third party company (perhaps a modelling company) to make a couple game models. While other models are made inhouse. They could have a separate license for every single thing, but it's FAR cheaper and easier to just license everything as a whole. However, in doing so, people often want their stuff only licensed to one product. This allows them to either get hired again for the new product, or at least to be paid again for use of their creation in a new product.

The result is that most game assets are licensed to that one game, and in using them in others, you aren't exactly stealing from Bethesda directly, but from the freelance companies that they hired to help.

That's all, really.

This doesn't mean that the meshes can't be recreated by another modder though, does it?

Interesting question, when is a replica legal and when is it illegal, and how can you tell one from the other? It's a grey area like most modding, finding answers to such questions costs a lot of time and time is money. So that question won't be asked until finding an answer is profitable in one way or the other, if you get my meaning...

If you find a modeller who allows you to use his Morrowind tiles for Skyrim, it's not that hard to convert them:

- Open the Morrowind NIF file in http://niftools.sourceforge.net/wiki/NifSkope, and use File/Export/Export .OBJ
- Open a similar Skyrim NIF, select the NiTriShape record and use File/Import/Import .OBJ
- Save the Skyrim NIF under a new name and use it in the CK.

Of course you can do this only with fan-made Morrowind models. Here, in Bethesda's forums, it's illegal to talk about converting vanilla assets from Bethesda's games to use them in other games.
