Meteor Showers

Post » Tue Aug 13, 2013 7:20 pm

So, the Perseid meteor shower is occurring as I type this. Big meteor shower, with approximately fifty to one hundred meteors falling per hour. The visibility has peaked tonight.

I was wondering how much more visible the meteors are in southern areas than in Canada, where I live. I don't really live near any large cities, so there isn't much trouble with seeing the night sky, but the meteors seem to be quite small, and all heading south. Maybe the meteors appear larger in places like southern North America or maybe they don't show up at all.

But let's just discuss meteor showers and other astronomical phenomena that some of us may have experienced before. Supermoons, eclipses, anything at all that is a natural occurrence and is something to do with looking up at the night sky and thinking "You don't see that every day", post about them here. :)

It's been overcast here for days on end. Looks like I'm missing this one...

There's been rainstorms here for the last few days, so I can't see anything but dull greyness. No meteor showers for me.

I know that feel, bro. For almost my entire life I've missed out on these kinds of things because of an overcast night. Pretty disappointing when you want to see how large the Supermoon is this year and then it turns out you can't see anything past the thick clouds. :(

But hey, there's that comet (Can't remember name right now) passing by Earth these next few months. Supposed to be brighter than the moon on some nights. Really want to see this. :)

Meteor shower? What Meteor shower? I can't see anything funky going on in the sky, and probably because I live in southeast US.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or really answering the question I was wondering.

No sarcasm, I have not heard any news of a meteor shower going on. And as you suggested, I'm not seeing anything from where I live.

Wasn't it supposed to be big last night?

It is supposed to have happened from the 10th-13th of August. It was likely quite big last night, though last night I missed it. :P It was so bad tonight, and I think that I'll get one more night of meteor showers tomorrow, so it's all good. :D

Reminds me of those awkward evenings where the overcast sunset radiates a pale pink over everything. :P

It was clear here in central England, but I had no idea which direction to look so after about five minutes of standing in the middle of the back garden and not seeing anything, I got bored and went to bed.

I looked outside for ages (5mins) and couldn't see anything but 2 planes. My dad phoned to say he saw one over in Glasgow, lucky him but I think he sat outside with a beer for about an hour.
