Microsoft to cancel many features of Xbox One.

I noticed there wasn't a topic on this.

http://www.oxm.co.uk/56730/microsoft-removes-online-drm-from-xbox-one/

Basically, the important things include

-No online checks every 24 hours
-No always online needed
-Renting, trading, and buying preowned games work as the 360 does
-Likewise for lending games
No region specific locks(Xbox can be taken anywhere)

Although I was planning to buy it, this has increased my hopes for Microsoft. Anyone have any changed opinions?

For me, it seems that the gap is closing between PS4 and Xbox One now!

Edit, someone posted this while I was typing it-_-

Sources indicate Microsoft is going to move away from what's caused the company so much headache.

The tug-of-war between Microsoft and Sony just got more interesting. Multiple sources inform me Microsoft will announce what amounts to a complete reversal on its DRM policies for Xbox One today.

What does this mean?

  • No more always online requirement
  • The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
  • All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
  • An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
  • All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
  • No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
  • Region locks have been dropped
  • It is unclear what caused this huge change in policy right after E3, a week where

Microsoft executives spent days explaining, justifying, and talking about its policies to the press. I suspect Microsoft’s official announcement will say something to the effect of “we've been closely listening to consumer feedback.”

Based on what I’m being told, that’s definitely true.

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment.

Microsoft has taken an enormous amount of heat regarding DRM policies with its new console. Sony became consumer heroes at E3, announcing PlayStation 4 would not treat used games differently, and the status quo would reign. The company released this video, twisting the knife:

Then a link to the ps4 used game YouTube instructions. Sorry about formatting, I'm on my ipad.

A complete reversal like this, if true, doesn't help Microsoft. Finding a way to keep new interesting stuff like family plan while getting rid of 24hr restrictions would still provide some differentiation. Now they just have a more expensive, lower powered system with kinect that has never been a huge point for gamers

The online check thing not being followed through, supposedly, reminds me of how EA was wanting to do that with the first Mass Effect's PC version and ended up using no online checks for it.

I didn't really plan on getting it even though I really am excited for that new Insomniac game coming out for the Xbox One. The Xbox systems have never really interested me and many games for them have ended up with PC versions upon release or a bit after. Hopefully that Insomniac game will be a multi-platform one.

It's about time, ha. I guess all the people trashing the new Xbox and everyone praising the PS4 finally got them to drop a lot of their ridiculous BS. I may now consider getting one, if I have the spare cash to pay for it.

Microsoft has stopped the ship from sinking for now. We'll see how this plays out, since there is still the Kinect privacy issues that seemed to be number 2 on everyone's list of reasons to hate Xbox One. I think it's a good move by them though; they've avoided disaster with this announcement.
