Middle Earth Roleplaying Project under attack... by Warner B

Post » Sat Sep 08, 2012 10:02 am

Hi,

I just want a big DLC for skyrim to be in the middle earth, but just one mod for the moment is under developpement (one other is not popular and is developped by french people).
This mod is this one : http://www.moddb.com/mods/merp-middle-earth-roleplaying-project

Warner Bros don't want this mod for Skyrim... http://www.examiner.com/article/middle-earth-roleplaying-project-fights-against-warner-bros-cease-and-desist

1. Bethesda have to make a middle-earth DLC (why not Alagaesia too (Eragon)).
2. Save MERP and sign the petition. http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/save-merp-from-corporate-greed.html

thx for your support.
I'm on xbox 360 (It's why I want a DLC who add a section in the main menu "Middle-earth").

I think the folks at LOTRO have done a spectacular job. The world design is five time more interesting than TES. I doubt this "mod" will surpass the wonderful re created Tolkien world in LOTRO. In fact, I blame LOTRO for not being awe-inspired by Skyrim world because when I saw Rivendell and the Dwarves massive architecture, with its mirror-like floors, I was amazed.

I like how you automatically dismiss the other mod because its being developed by "french people". Like its going to be LOTR except everyone is wearing berets.

Lol no way. There's no way this could be pulled of probably; Tolkien would spin in his grave.

Naturally I signed. For this project it would be an good idea to use non US front persons, fighting this out in Netherlands or Swedish court would be much easier.
However non profit mods is one thing, Bethesda can not do anything like this, also this mod is an total conversion, think an lord of the rings game build on skyrims engine.

Adding part of middle earth to Skyrim makes no sense anyway, why not part of fallout who is an Bethesda product :) it would also not make sense.
Thinking of the image I saw once, Taken in fallout 3, however with an oblivion gate and an oblivion character who had just stepped trough.

It's not a mod to Skyrim, I'm sure- it uses the Skyrim CK to recreate a Tolkien mini-world.

I signed- Warner Brothers trying to ward off fair use Tolkien fan work, that is a laugh and a half. If it was the Tolkien Foundation, I could see it, but this is just ridiculous.

DLC? No. Mod? Yes.

The dumbest part is that the team for that mod makes no profit from it (at least I think), so why the hell do warner bros have to be so mean? :(

Even as an avid mod-user I don't really care. LotR has always been very overrated to me, so I can't really muster any [censored]'s to give. Now if they tried to attack and take down the ASoIaF mods that have already been made, we've have some problems.

As long as it isn't being suggested Bethesda makes this into a dlc...

When I think of stuff like this I think back to fallout and how every game needs a Wild Wasteland option. That meaning people who like seeing the little references can toggle it on or off at the start of the game. As for a whole DLC on it hell no love them both but I don't want them to clash together anytime soon.

MERP is an amazing mod and it is better than any LOTR game ever made.
Oh yeah, I'd put a link to the mod website rather than the petition because it isn't allowed.

from what i understand in your OP, you think bethesda should counter sue on behalf of the developers of MERP? never going to happen, why would bethesda (which is a game developer, not a publisher) spend tons of money on a legal battle against a group which legally owns the rights to said LOTR licenses?

LOTR wasn't so much "pop culture" (in the bad meaning of the term), until a certain pathetic Hollywood director decided to create a cut and watered down movie with practically all of the stupid American movies' cliches included.

Thanks for screwing up a classic of the literature, mr. Peter Jackson.

"The 'Middle Earth Roleplaying Project' aims to recreate J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth in the Creation engine of 'The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim'. The player will be plunged into Middle Earth near the end of the Third Age, not long before the War of the Ring breaks out."

So, its a project that uses the CK to create a Middle Earth world?

And did warner bros say why did they decide to halt the mod? (though its probably "nah i don't want you people getting MAH content into another game!" like morroblivion maybe).

Do you not see the fundamental problem preventing a DLC like that from being made? That problem being the fact that Skyrim takes place on Nirn - a planet in an entirely different fiction? How would one even begin to justify the presence of Middle-Earth - a location in a totally unrelated universe - on Nirn?

Bethesda would never do such a thing, as it should be. They should work on DLCs that complement their universe, not systematically destroy it.

These guys would have done better to just make their mod rather than establish an internet presence and do this publicly. They stepped on the IP owner's toes and deserve the backlash. A simple mod would have been the best way to go.

Bethesda's policy concerning using other IP material in their games is well known. There's no way this project will be endorsed by Bethesda game studios, gamesas or Zenimax.

These guys crossed the line and have little choice in the matter.
