I might finally get a job..but I'm scared.

Post » Fri Jul 20, 2012 11:54 pm

So I just got a voice mail from a local Target store asking to call back to schedule an interview. I applied for an overnight Logistics positions just yesterday, so it seems like a good chance for me. But I'm scared [censored]less. This is the first opportunity for a job in years, and I can't afford to screw this up, but I fear that I will somehow. I can barely work up the courage to call them back, but I know I have to. Any words of encouragement would help. I know some of you might find it hard to do that for me, since I've been a bit of a jerk, but this could be the step I need to start bettering my life.

I recommend watching the film American Beauty. I know Target isn't fast food, but if you adopt the same mentality, it will help.

Everyone always say "just believe in yourself", which is correct, but not always that easy. At least give a self secure impression, and avoid saying too much "uuh" "uhm" "uhm like" and similar crap. Bring a water bottle, that way you can take a sip instead of going "uuhm, uh, I-uh, well, like".

Wouldn't sipping from a water bottle in the middle of an interview come across as rude? Especially if you do it more than a couple of times.

I think you'd better call back as soon as possible.
You will than show enthusiasm for the job, which mighy give you a plus.
And you don't have much time to worry about it, which will make you less nervous for the interview.

When you go to the interview, try to be as relaxed as you can be, wear clothes that you are comfortable in, and have a positive attitude, thinking everything will turn out okay.

And remember: they called you back, so they think you are qualified for the job already. You just have to show them that you will fit in with the team you will be working with. Don't act differently just to get the job, be yourself.

It's not a solution to use often, more of a panic button, sort of. But, if you hear the question is going to be hard to answer, it buys you a little more time sipping the water towards the end of the question to think about your answer.

Try to sound confident when you talk to them, even if you have to fake it. You can train this up by trying to think up questions and stuff they might say and then plan your replies. As EivNor said, try to have as few "uuh" as possible, and planned responses can help with that. A few are unavoidable and perfectly fine, but extreme amounts are bad.

Also, as weird it may sound, even if you just gonna call them up and talk, it helps to be dressed properly. Being refreshed and welldressed is a confidence booster, and it shows in the way you talk over the phone.

I know how you feel, I just got a new job doing construction on a new oil plant and I have no experience with this kind of work so I'm nervous about learning what to do around here and I'm not much of a people person which is going to be a challenge since I'm working with so many people..
I was supposed to start today but luckily they screwed up putting me in the system so I have the next four days off with pay lol, yay free money.

Best you can do is keep up a positive attitude and act like you're the best damn thing since sliced bread.

The phone call went great..I did my best to sound polite, barely stuttered and fumbled my words (Said "uhh" like twice), and I've got two interviews scheduled for noon on Monday. Now I have to somehow make my nervous, pathetic frame look like it'd be a good choice for warehouse and unloading work. I'm stronger than I look, but they might not take the chance. I'd love a set of Anchor Arms right about now..

Well, SubTonic, I have indeed found you to be quite the jerk in my time on the forums, but I've also grown to respect you for dealing with what you've got. I can also sympathize greatly with having terrible anxiety about these types of things, as I'm the same way. I'd recommend deep breaths, comforting music, and just psyching yourself up. Then just go for it, don't put it off.

It's a tough thing to deal with, but you're not alone. I have faith in you. And if they don't want to give you a job, just be a jerk to them. That'll show 'em.

Edit: Dammit, my advice came too late. Oh well. I'm glad it went well!

One of the best things I've seen help me, and other people I've known, was to practice answering some of the standard questions you are asked at most job interviews. I've seen these questions come up at every level of job from entry level up. Usually they go something like: What're 3 strenghts you have? What're 3 weaknesses? (and how do you deal with them) Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years? And they will ask you questions to see if you've done any research about the company itself.

You may want to look up more typical interview questions (my examples were very short) and practice giving appropriate, but honest, answers.

One more thing I've learned. Never try to "sell a negative". Don't talk bad about a former boss or employer as a reason for leaving. The company you're dealing with will likely put themselves in the other person's shoes and it could quickly derail your interview.

Be confident, relaxed, happy, 15 minutes early, and take a note pad and pen so you can take quick/brief notes when they give you details about the job, hours, benefits, etc.

Finally, let them bring up the pay rate. Don't push that out there on your own. A lot of people don't take that very well.

Anyway, just what I've seen first hand and advice I've gotten from others in my field and HR rep's. Hope it helps.

Best of luck to you
