In Skyrim, cow's milk is produced on a minimal scale and is by far the most commonly consumed form of milk by children. Commercial dairy farming using enchanted milking equipment produces the vast majority of milk in Skyrim. Dairy cattle such as the brown cattle have been bred selectively for increased milk production. About 90% of the dairy cows in the Whiterun Plains and 85% in Markarth are brown cattle. Other dairy cows in the Whiterun Plains include Sheo cattle.

Mammoths are not milked commercially; however, various sources report cows resulting from cross-breeding mammoths and domestic cattle are good milk producers, and have been used both during the Skyrim settlement of Atmora and during the development of commercial Mamcow in the first part of the 2nd era and early part of the third era.
