Mini games and fun activities

Aren't there any sort of mini games and activities, where you can join a tournament or do gaurd patrol. These sort of things, I think, helps emphazise the RPG feeling, which I think is hardly there in Skyrim. The TES catch phrase "Live another live in another world, and "You are who play" doesn't really seem apparent in Skyrim, since I can't really play anything else than an adventurer who goes out and kill bad guys. While that sort of thinkg is definitly fun, I would also like some more everyday-like activities that could help shape my character. I think it would be great if they had made it important to eat and sleep, while not making it seem like a chore, but creating a sense of purpose with it. It may be a difficult thing to do, but I don't think the alternative of not including any of the sort is better. Admittely I haven't been playing it long enough to determine if such things exists in the game, but it just doesn't seem like it. Am I wrong?
