Misogyny In Games

Post » Tue Mar 12, 2013 5:23 am

Today Sony Santa Monica has decided to alter the title of the infamous "Bros Before Hos" trophy for God of War: Ascension. While personally the trophy doesn't bother me, I can understand why it may bother others. When I looked at the http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/03/11/after-outcry-sony-alters-god-of-war-ascension-quot-bros-before-hos-quot-trophy.aspx?CommentPosted=true&PageIndex=2 about it, I was not so surprised to see a lot of ignorant feedback. They tried to claim "it's just a joke" or make faulty comparisons to other titles. The bottom line is they missed the point.

It's not really about the in-game content in a isolated state. It's about reducing the content to a crass joke. Gaming gets slammed for being misogynistic and rightfully so at times. What makes me sad is to see someone speak up against it then get slammed for trying to be a decent person. How does the changing of the trophy affect you in any way? I understand why someone could see it as offensive so removing only helps as far as I'm concerned.

There is also the subject of Anita Sarkeesian. A few months ago she started a Kickstarter for a video series that would explore this hot-button topic in video games. You can imagine all the loving responses she received. Despite the backlash by some she achieved her goal and the series actually started the other day. The first episode can be found http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6p5AZp7r_Q. It's a pretty good video and she has plenty of valid points, despite the somewhat mono-tone delivery. Which I bet is her trying not to give fuel to the fire.

As a white male living in the U.S., misogyny hasn't exactly been a problem for me. That said, I am a passionate gamer. If someone where to ask me to describe myself in one word it would be "gamer". As I'm sure you all know, gaming has seen its fair share of attackers. Violence among youth, obesity, immaturity, and sixism are real problems for gaming. They are part of the reason why gaming still struggles in the eyes of the mainstream culture. As not only a gamer, but a decent human being I would like to see this rectified. I would like to see games continue to mature because I truly believe it is the best medium for entertainment.

What is your take on the misogyny is games BGSF?

I wouldn't call it misogyny per se, games were initially marketed to men. Misogyny and racism too, actually make sense in games because if their supposed to recreate real life they should create something close to real life not a magical fairy land where everyone gets along and treats each other equally and with respect.

People are too sensitive.

There are few things that I have ever seen that may have actually been offensive, but not too many.

Don't say this. Especially if you aren't one of the targeted groups. It makes you look so privileged and is really not even a debating point.

But anyway...I don't find misogyny and racism in games particularly spectacular considering you could find it in any other medium. It's a great topic but frankly exhausting and better discussed with more "involved and intellectually-seeking" people.... otherwise you get comments like the ones above. And trolling.
