Mister Sandman..useless?

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 4:26 am

I took the Sandman perk. Being as perk slots are so valuable in NV I'm wondering if I messed up. No NPCs seem to ever sleep. Did I make a huge mistake? Is it useless?

Hi, rest assured that when you come across NCR/Legion or basically any encampment, you will find people sleeping ALLOT(at night obviously).

I myself, being a sneaky character, have been considering getting this perk, but have been unsure.

Sandman has always been a novelty perk, even in FO3. It's not so much underpowered in New Vegas because certain NPCs hardly go to bed, it's underpowered because that's one less perk slot you have to work with when it comes to the bad guys and creatures who will always be awake and always hostile to you - such as raider encampments and wandering Deathclaws.

If you took that perk because you wanted some free and easy XP, then you can always go hunting for Bighorners. Bighorners don't attack unless you get very close to them, so you're free to pick them off at a distance. If you originally took Sandman because you like to steal people's stuff, just do it the old fashioned way with a high Sneak skill.

I guess it would be more fun to use than practical, but if your chaarcter has high combat attributes, you could just sneak close & kill them with VATS normaly if done right. But Sandman may be more efficent without mistakes, like warning close friends of the sleeper.

Even then, I heard that even with the Sandman perk your victim will sometimes manage to shout out for help before you do them in.

I don't know how it works in this game, but in F3 it was useful for killing people without having all their friends turn hostile.

I'd like to be able to kill people in their sleep without alerting people near by, only other way to do that is sneak with a silent weapon..and it is far riskier.. Just seems that no one sleeps. In F3 NPCs were on day/night cycles and they went to bed.

Hmm. I used this perk in my first playthrough of NV and that never happened to me. There were times when it came in very handy, but it's obviously not going to be useful all the time.

I took it with one character.

A couple of times people have managed to shout a bit, but nobody comes even if there are other people in the same room.

I think any perk that only works some of the time are kind of useless. I'll take a Bloody Mess over a Lady Killer any day. I'ts 5% less but at least it works on everyone and everything. I guess the 50% with Entomologist is pretty sweet though.

Yeah but... why? For the XP? For their gear? Or just for the lulz?

The only time when I could recommend taking the Sandman perk is for the latter. When you basically want to kill people silently in their sleep because you want to kill people silently in their sleep, as opposed to the killing being means to some other end.

Actually, now that I think about it, people do go to bed in Goodsprings, The Correctional Facility, Novac, Camp Forlorn Hope, Camp McCarran... just wait until midnight, then if they are not automatically in their beds wait around for them to walk there and hop in. What particular place were you wanting to kill people in?

Thinking about Novac now, yes. That town is pretty sleepless. I think the bald merchant guy is the only one I remember going to bed. I recall Ranger Andy getting up from bed but I never saw him sleep at length. No-Bark has weird sleeping hours and he stays up late but he does go to bed. There's also the lady a bit north in the junk yard, too. There's also like a common house, if I'm remembering correctly, where NPC "Novac Settlers" or whatever gather into at night.

Try other towns to get your psychopathic murderer on.

I pick the Mister Sandman Perk on any sneak character I use (unless they are RPed as good).

As long as you are hidden the sleeping person will never ever wake up and scream, you get more exp than usual for the kill (50xp) also and mainly:

For the LULZ
It has a nifty little sound effect and animation too.

What i found is that if there are two ( or more prob ) people sleeping in the same room, when you kill one ( silently? ) with mister sandman the other person wakes up and attacks/calls for help?
Maybe he/she has a sixth sense or that he/she was a twin? ( spooky )

Are you [detected] or [hidden]?
As if detected its RONSEAL why they'll notice and call for alarm.

It is incredibly useful for RPG characters who have night-time perks and a really high sneak - I stress high sneak. Otherwise it is a badly limited perk.

EDIT: If only sleeping deathclaws lay...

I would be good if it worked on people who are knocked out due to KO damage.

I tried it out on one guy to see if it worked. It did not, but, I did not test it on anyone else to see if he was bugged.

Would be funny... be like... KO!... then mr.sandman steps in.

Sandman is an easy way to loot and get EXP from friendly NPC; I mean you can just go to Camp Golf and start slaughtering the rangers.

Doing Nelson/Forlon Hope mission would be easier too

Apparently you can get unlimited XP from it by killing kids, who don't die, so they can live to die again.
