MMO Boredom

Post » Sun Aug 25, 2013 4:38 pm

Messing around in Defiance, i've run across the same old quests that plague MMOs throughout the world. Of course, these aren't limited to just MMOs as they can be in any game that has quest driven elements.

As the little topic tag states, which quest(s) do you hate, or dislike?

For me, I can't stand these fetch quests. The missions/quests I have an absolute disdain for are the fetch quests that have you go to one spot, you arrive and get the item, and then you have to run ALL THE WAY back to the starting location to update before you receive a second update to go to the opposite end of the map. After all of that, you have to rinse and repeat like 2 or 3 times to finally complete it. The reward for all your hard work? Some worthless item you don't use, will never use, or an item that is replaced all too easily by an uncommon piece of drop loot.

MMO grinding tends to turn me off.

Having to do some tedious and unprofitable thing a million times before I unlock a next tier.

I don't mind fetch quests. I think it's a bit of a blanket term that singles out a basic mechanic for no real reason. There are only so many things a questing hero can actually do and retrieving/ uncovering/ stealing etc. an item is one of those.

As long as there is a nice story around it, I didn't mind any quest in a game like Amalur at all. But I don't do randomly generated bounty quests in Skyrim.

It's all about the fluff really. As long as fetching the item is kept interesting, maybe a little plot twist, maybe uncovering some background information, they can be quite enjoyable.

Despise fetch quests, and not always because they are fetch quests which are boring enough but because developers make them last much much longer than they should which adds to the boredom. I haven't played WoW in years but there was one quest I hated so much I cant forget ... I needed to collect x amount of basilisk brains ..... only not every basilisk I killed had one ... wtf?

Fetch quests bother me, and so do kill X amount of creature quests.

I mean, anything tedious, drawn up new with different names in a different region, these quests I guess bug me.

Which is why EVE was fun to play for a while, and GW2 had something new and cool. Certain Events were boring, but some were really cool, and of course had multiple paths depending on how you and other players reacted.

I dunno'. LOTRO for a while was fun, because I am a huge Tolkien buff and so even though many quests were similar, the fact that I felt even more connected to Middle-earth was cool.

They did something cool though, they mixed up various quests, like "explore this region" and what not.

I dunno'. I love MMOs but I usually stick to PVP. Not a fan of any quests, I guess, except story quests :D
