MMO mentality ...

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 2:14 pm

Is it just me or has Skyrim been invaded by MMO whiners ?

The type of MMO player who tears through content in hours and days instead of weeks and months, and then complains of being bored. The player who sends private messages to others in a raid/group explaining how crappy there current gear and specialization is. The player who requires others to have 30 different 3rd party mods or he will [censored] and moan incessantly about someone without it.

I see post after post with this kind of thinking, where they min/max everything, play the game on master, and then complain about it being too easy and how it svcks.

This is a single player game, no one cares what you do in the game except yourself, no one is forcing anyone to make oneself in game Uber and Overpowered, yet there are countless people complaining about doing just this, others probably use tons of console commands and cheat then complain about it being too easy on Master. Like the guy who posted about how easy the game is once he has 30x sneak damage and 2 Blades of Woe equipped.

I dunno i guess i just hate to think that the next Elder Scrolls game might be influenced by this type of player's mentality.

Anyone else agree that Skyrim has been invaded by the WoW mentality gamer ? Or am i off the mark here and need to go re-new my Prozac prescription ?

More Prozac! I've seen a few people like this, but most people I know seem quite content with Skyrim's non-MMO structure.

I think you should seriously re-evaluate your life if you complain about complainers and use WoW as a boogeyman for anything you feel is wrong.

I don't like how simple Skyrim is, and that's all there is to it. I don't find the puzzles puzzling. I dont' find the boss battles very "bossy," and I don't find the quests very engaging.

I've never played an MMO in my life, and it has nothing to do with min/maxing or whatever.

I definitely think there's been a large influx of MMO players to these boards lately. I'm almost positive terms like "sword and board" are from WoW, but that's mostly conjecture since I don't play that kiddy garbage.

The problem are not the "MMO whiners". Everyone can play the game how they like. But the thing is Skyrim has a disease:

Who says that they're just MMO whiners? Whiners exist in every walk of life.

I don't think that Bethesda will bow to the MMO mentality, they are two different genres of RPG. To make a game act like an MMO, you kind of have to make an MMO, as what else would be the point?

As for the MMO crowd, it has been this way since Everquest and Morrowind. I guess it is hard to shift gears from just worrying about your character's level as that is the end all of MMO's to worrying about the story which is the end all of TES games and letting the levels be what they are. Anyway, this is not a new experience and we can just do our best to educate the MMO players to how an RPG like TES works.

I think you are under the false assumption that this is relegated to MMOs and that character min/maxing has existed way before MMORPGs. There is a valid complaint that for many players the game does not present an adequate challenge to them when they level up considerably, not even by the use of console commands. This does not mean the game must be more difficult to compensate, it just needs a slider that allows players more control over the difficulty of the game that surpasses Master difficulty. As others have mentioned numerous times before, you should be able to set the level off-set of your enemies (IE enemies are always at least +10 of your level, or -10 and so forth), the potential amount of enemies in a pack etc. Criticism and complaint is nothing new, and yes it is greatly exaggerated on the forums - mostly because you have kids and immature advlts posting non-sense. If it is any indication, just look at how many post titles are misspelled, which is sad considering the forums have a built-in spell check...

But I digress, the "MMO" mentality are just avid gamers wanting a challenge. For all intents and purposes, MOST games do not present much of a challenge this day and age due to the catering of the lowest common denominator. That doesn't really bother me, but man at least give those wanting a challenge that option without having to create arbitrary rule-sets (not wearing armor etc.)

I actually do agree that some things need a buff, like the puzzles and bosses. I actually don't mind struggling sometimes, that's what makes the reward sweeter.

i am glad i dont need to excessively grind anything to reap the advantages. I dont like MMOs because i dont like tedious chores.

My character has about 50 smithing, and to me- i do alot of smithing compared to other task. If i had to smith alot more just to get to 50 ( i cant even improve enchanted gear yet) i would be annoyed and probably give it up.

I play on master, and its far from EASY to me.I am in no way "one shotting" dragins like some claim.

"Sword and Board" - Much older term than WoW, think MUDs, if you are "non-kiddy" enough to know what that is.

The people who claim to be one shotting Ancient Dragons on Master and the like are sensationalists. To disbelieve them is to prove that you're not gullible.

Well, while whiners mayhap be whiners.
The conventional terminology that seems to be prevalent and the min/maxing of every single insignificant skimp of a statistic coupled with that same whining is establishing some rather luminous neon signs in the familiar shape of arrows that are pointing in the general direction of said games.

There was a DPS thread. A D.P.S. thread.

Wow that is some lazy trollin you're doing there kiddo.

MMOs didn't invent numbers in games.

On what planet do all MMOers send nasty tells to people insulting them? Quit your trolling before you sink yourself.

Is it just me or has Skyrim been invaded by MMO whiners ?

I was going to end my post with this, but after the preview, I though on changing the order:

81 hours here. One character. Level 21. Enjoying my character, playing RPG style. 2 main cities visited. 2 villages. Still haven't noticed anything "unbalanced". No hurries to beat anything. Challenge in every bandit camp, cave, or fortress I find, or I'm sent to. And also enjoying the feeling of becoming more powerfull as I increase levels and choose my perks based on what I want for my char.

And to end, this:

Not just MMO whiners.

Keeping in mind this game has been heavily announced, "consolized", and also that it sold +4 million copies (+ piracy ones), it's normal that it gets invaded with players from STALKER, Far Cry, WoW, Need for Speed, Diablo 2, SWG, The Witcher, Diablo 3-waiters, etc... that expect a Clic-N-Play game.. but oh, surprise... this is a sandbox RPG.

One good thing with these TES games is that they are NOT massive mutiplayer, not even multiplayer, so developers don't have to worry about unbalanced templates from hardcoe-players coming from the games mentioned above.. oh wait.. you created THAT unbalanced template.. well, you broke your OWN game. That doesn't mean "the game is unbalanced", neither broken... your char is.

This.

So many things on the forums I hope NOBODY at Beth ever takes seriously. Or spends more time on than it takes to scroll down over it...

could you imagine having to spend hours smithing, just to get some basic advantages? MMO style crafting is one of the most tedious gaming conventions ever!
These elitist who spend 100+ hrs in a game they dont like, just want to show off to us "lower gamers" that they can do something we dont have the time to do.

Thats why theyre upset. this isnt an MMO where you get to show off how long you did some tedious task. We dont marvel at your ability to get 100 smithing on a lvl 5 character.

Horrible failure of logic there guy. HAWRRRABBBLE.

You are "almost positive" but it's "mostly conjecture"... If you really think that the term Sword and Board came from WoW... I don't know what to tell you then you need to reevaluate your entire perspective, because whatever knowledge foundation you are using as the basis for your opinions on videogames is shaky at best.

This always happens with the market getting bigger. It's always been whiney, you just see more whining (and trolling) because there's more people, and more people also means the people who usually post legitimate discussion are more and more discouraged. That's when a lax forum moderation approach needs to turn into a stricter moderation approach. While I don't think whining should be outlawed, they should restrict it a bit more, maybe consolidate more posts and be overall quicker on the draw.

It's also partly to due with the population of the Internet too -- more people are online posting in various game forums than 10 years ago. In fact, a lot of people on these forums now were like 5 years old about 10 years ago.

Please get serious and stop trolling. Everyone who crafts in an RPG is an "elitist" with no life now? ROFL. How can mods let this trolling continue?
